The region received encouraging news this week when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers revealed that the cleanup of RDX and TNT residue from the ground water will be completed at least ten years ahead of schedule. The new target is now 2017 instead of the originally forecasted 2030. A method of injecting molasses and soybean oil into the ground has yielded excellent results thus far, allowing the targeted date of completion to be moved up.

This does not impact the sale of the CAAP land to the Grand Island Area Economic Development Corp. According to EDC president Marlin Ferguson, the land will be available for development like any other piece of property. The only caveat is that no domestic water wells could be drilled and the injection sites would have to remain in place until that area is clean. Since the goal is to have domestic water come from outside of the CAAP land for firms occupying the site, the issue is moot.

Negotiations reportedly have been smooth and fast-paced. Participants seem to be on the same page and eager to get the deal finished.

It can't happen fast enough. The region is ready for this chapter of the CAAP land story to be turned and a new era of industrial growth ushered in.

The Army has been diligent about their cleanup and the use of new technology to hasten the outcome is encouraging. The bottom line is that the cleanup has to be complete and done correctly. There can be no shortcuts that result in more time needed to eventually complete the task.
