Grand Island put the finishing touches on a strong home season Thursday, sweeping senior day home duals from Columbus.

The Islander boys defeated the Discoverers 114-54 to finish the season 5-0 at the Grand Island YMCA. The Grand Island girls downed Columbus 110-60 to finish 4-1 at home.

Grand Island coach Brian Jensen said it was a nice way for his senior class to go out.

The senior girls included Sina Hollunder, Ariel Lahowetz, Benedikte Gjostol, Lauren Shoemaker, Morgan Hibbs, Alyson Hartwig and Janina Traub. The Grand Island senior boys are Davin Jameson, Ryan Rerucha, Mike Schultz, John Cook and Noland Forsythe.

"They've set the tone for improving our work ethic every year," Jensen said of his team's seniors. "They've been the ones who have had to lead the way, stay later than everybody else and show everybody how to work. Every year, our work ethic has been improved and this year has been the highest I've seen it ever."

The hard work appeared to pay off against Columbus as Grand Island won 15 events combined, including several seniors.

"I was very impressed that all of our key seniors got wins today," Jensen said. "We were definitely going for that."

Grand Island's boys had six different swimmers win individual events in Joshua Rapp (200 freestyle in 2:20.88), Ryan Rerucha (100 butterfly in 1:09.48), Jay Hahn (100 freestyle in 1:04.37), Joshua Jacobsen (400 freestyle in 5:03.35), Mike Schultz (100 backstroke in 1:16.66) and Davin Jameson (100 breaststroke in 1:15.07). The winning times posted by Rerucha and Jameson were secondary state qualifying marks.

The 200 medley relay team of Schultz, Jameson, Rerucha and Hahn took first in a secondary state qualifying time of 2:08.26. The 400 freestyle relay squad of Rapp, Mathew Tupper, Jacobsen and Jameson won in 4:23.89.

For the Islander girls Miranda Vlach-Buller was a double individual event winner, taking the 200 individual medley (2:48.03) and the 400 freestyle (5:08.80). Both were secondary state qualifying times.

Lauren Shoemaker (200 freestyle in 2:39.65), Morgan Hibbs (50 freestyle in 29.90), Alyson Hartwig (100 butterfly in 1:19.50) and Ariel Lahowetz (100 backstroke in 1:11.35) also won individual events. Lahowetz's time was an automatic state qualifying mark, while Hibbs recorded a secondary state qualifying time.

The 200 medley relay team of Lahowetz, Shoemaker, Hartwig and Hibbs won in a secondary state qualifying time of 2:22.26. The 400 freestyle relay team comprised of Shoemaker, Jayne McGovern, Abby Jameson and Vlach-Buller won in 4:45.25, also a secondary state qualifying mark.

Jensen said the only thing he was disappointed in was the performance of Grand Island's relays.

"Our relays have got to get going," Jensen said. "We have very little time left and I'm just not seeing the effort I need to there. It's now or never and you've got to get four people putting everything on the line and giving it everything they've got.

"I just haven't been able to get that and I don't know why."

Grand Island will next participate in Saturday's Elkhorn Invitational. After that, the Islanders will compete the Heartland Athletic Conference meet Feb. 8-9 in the Devaney Sports Center at Lincoln the final meet prior to state.

"Overall, today was a good momentum-builder going into the invitational this weekend because this invite is going to be key," Jensen said. "If we can get a couple of wins on the boys and girls sides or a win and a close second, that's a lot of momentum going into the conference meet is what we're going to need."
