Nebraska election interest is growing as Super Tuesday wrapped up in 24 states and Nebraska Democrats gear up for a Saturday presidential caucus.
But there's also confusion.
Hall County Election Assistant Denice Kruse said some Hall County voters reported to election precincts Tuesday thinking that Nebraska was among the states that had either a primary or caucus on Super Tuesday, which was Feb. 5.
Instead, she reminded voters that the Nebraska Democratic Party is hosting caucuses in counties across the state on Saturday. The caucus is for the Democratic presidential nomination only, party officials stated.
Nebraska's primary election, for all partisan and nonpartisan federal, state and local races, is May 13. Polls will be open that day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Murray said Democrats will still vote in the May primary, but to select candidates for other offices farther down on the ticket. The Democratic presidential candidates will still appear on the May primary ballot, but any votes cast at that time will be for "a beauty contest," Murray said.
"The (primary election) vote will not change the result of the caucus," he said.
People who plan to participate in the caucus Saturday, which can include Republicans and Independents who re-register as Democrats at the caucus, should plan to spend more time than at a primary or general election site.
Participants will be asked to stand in groups supporting a candidate. If that candidate fails to receive at least 15 percent support from the participants present, that candidate will be deemed not viable and the participants can regroup to another candidate.
"I've been getting a lot of calls about it," Murray said Tuesday. "I'm expecting pretty good turnout for it."
The time for the caucus varies by county across Nebraska.
The caucus in Hall County will be conducted at nine locations beginning at 2 p.m., Murray said.
The locations are:
* First Presbyterian Church, 2103 W. Anna, Grand Island, which will host Precincts 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 21.
