For Brent Moravec, the decision was a no-brainer.
When the Grand Island Central Catholic senior received the opportunity to be part of the University of Nebraska's revitalized walk-on program, he didn't need time to think about it before answering "yes."
"I'm really, really excited about it," said Moravec, who was among 18 Husker walk-ons announced Wednesday. "It's an once-in-a-lifetime deal."
The 6-foot, 180-pound three-sport Crusader standout also considered playing at Nebraska-Omaha, but Lincoln's Memorial Stadium was always his preferred college destination.
"It's always been my dream to play there," Moravec said. "My coach (Scott Rezac) really got me in their recruiting picture.
"I went there for a game in the fall and to their walk-on day two weeks ago."
As a running back/defensive back/return man, Moravec helped GICC qualify for the state playoffs for three straight seasons for only the second time in school history.
With the Crusaders having some recent success as part of the NU walk-on program, Moravec feels comfortable following in the footsteps of current Huskers Todd Peterson and Tyler Wortman.
"I know Todd Peterson pretty well," Moravec said. "It'll be nice to have an older guy there that I can talk to and ask questions."
Moravec looks to play as a defensive back for the Huskers.
He now has time to get familiar with the new coaching staff. He was limited to talking to NU coaches once to maintain his status as an "unrecruited walk-on" and remain eligible for academic scholarships.
Besides being excited about joining the Nebraska program, Moravec is also enthusiastic about how he's feeling in general.
Following football season, he underwent shoulder surgery.
"My left shoulder kept dislocating," he said. "I'm feeling a lot better now than I have in a while."
While Moravec was forced to miss basketball season and might see his track and field season get off to a one week late start, he'll be 100 percent once college football practices roll around.
And he'll do that right where he dreamed he would be.
