A Grand Island woman escaped serious injury when she was pinned under a car as it slid off an icy highway Tuesday.
Yormarie Dilan-Cruz, 25, tried to get out of a 1998 Dodge Intrepid as the vehicle was sliding off Highway 281 near Wood River Road at about 10:49 a.m. Tuesday, said Hall County Chief Deputy Sheriff Chris Rea.
The car, which was spinning as it left the roadway, came to rest in the east ditch on top of Dilan-Cruz, Rea said.
When a deputy arrived on the scene, he found Dilan-Cruz face down under the car with only her head and shoulders visible. Other motorists had stopped to assist her and had covered her with their coats, Rea said.
A passerby used a jack to lift the Intrepid off of Dilan-Cruz before medical personnel arrived, Rea said.
She was then taken to St. Francis Medical Center, where she was treated and released Tuesday, according to a hospital spokesman.
The driver of the car, Martin Ramos-Garcia, 28, of Grand Island, was referred to the Hall County attorney's office for not having a driver's license, Rea said.
In addition to Ramos-Garcia and Dilan-Cruz, there were two other passengers in the Intrepid. None of them were believed to be using seat belts at the time of the accident, Rea said.
Sheriff's deputies responded to three other accidents caused by slick roadways Tuesday, but none involved injuries, he said.
Grand Island police were busy with weather-related accidents Tuesday as well. Between 8 a.m. and midnight, officers responded to 37 accidents, said Capt. Robert Falldorf. The number dwindled to six between midnight and about 11 a.m. Wednesday, he said.
The majority of the accidents in the city involved property damage and no serious injuries were reported, he said.
