Students competing in Mathcounts competition

Students from Walnut and Westridge middle schools will compete in the middle school Mathcounts competition Feb. 14 at the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

The Nebraska Society of Professional Engineers' Midstate Chapter sponsors the competition. Winners advance to state competition.

Students competing as a team for Walnut are Donald Nabity, Kuulei Hose, Preston Fegley and Susanna Zach. Students competing as individuals for Walnut are Kyle Ward, Austin Koehler, Josh Mathews and Sarah Quezada.

Students competing as a team for Westridge are Sierra Turpin, Shana Havenridge, Jessica Bober and Nicole Schroeder. Students competing as individuals for Westridge are Kenna Sattley, Seth Redwine, Preston Dramse and Garret Forgey.

Mathcounts is a national math enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement in every U.S. state and territory. Mathcounts is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

Teachers use the free Mathcounts curriculum materials to supplement classroom materials or as an extracurricular activity. Schools select students to compete individually or as part of a team in one of the more than 500 written and oral competitions held nationwide. Top students advance to the state, and ultimately, national level.
