Hosting caucuses statewide Saturday was a difficult decision for the Nebraska Democratic Party, but one that has paid off, said a party official.

Chapman resident Maureen Nickels, a retired Grand Island teacher and member of the Nebraska Democratic Central Committee, said the committee initially had thought of having caucuses on Super Tuesday, Feb. 5.

"I didn't support that," Nickels said.

She feared that working Nebraskans would find it difficult to caucus on a Tuesday night. She also wanted the state to become a showcase in the event that Super Tuesday didn't decide the party nominee. She thought a Saturday caucus following Super Tuesday could be the ticket.

What Nickels hoped for has happened.

"It's bringing out the candidates," she said. "It's brought people in."

Democratic Presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Barack Obama spoke in Omaha Thursday. His wife, Michelle, is speaking in Lincoln Friday.

Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of Democratic presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, was in both Lincoln and Grand Island Thursday.

Having national interest in Nebraska's caucuses is driving up interest in voters participating in the caucuses, Nickels said.

"The excitement is there," she said. "It's awakened people."
