Eagles Auxiliary #378
The regular meeting of Eagles Auxiliary #378 was held on Dec. 10 with the meeting being called to order by Madam President Carolyn Arndt. Door prizes were won by Joyce Hargens, Karla Smith and Dorothy Arndt. The Aerie Christmas Party was Dec. 13 with ham and all the fixings with the Auxiliary members to bring either a salad or dessert. Madam Presiden Carolyn Arndt gave gifts to all officers and we also had our exchange of Christmas Gifts with our Secret Sister.
The January meeting was held Jan. 14, with Madam President Carolyn Arndt presiding. Joyce Hargens is selling "Little Hands, Little Feet" key chains with all proceeds going to the Jimmy Durante Fund. Ethel Rezabek sat in as vice president and Annie sat in as Inside Guard. Fran Darwin, Mother of the Year, presented gifts to all present at the meeting.
Up coming events will be Valentines Dinner at 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 14 serving rib-eye steak with baked potato, vegetable and salad. You must have your RSVP in no later than Feb. 7.
Grand Island Women's Club Duplicate Bridge 1
Grand Island Women's Club Duplicate Bridge 1 met Jan. 25 at the club house.
First-place winners were Betty Rother and Joan Head. Second place Pat Vogel and Avella Highland. Third place Reva Berens and Mona Dubas.
There were two guests Joan Head and Ruby Jakubowski. The next bridge day will be at 1 p.m. Feb. 11 at the club house, 1109 W. Second.
Truth Rebekah Lodge #132
Truth Rebekah Lodge met Jan. 25 at the I.O.O.F Hall. Brother Fred Stubbendick Noble Grand opened the meeting with 24 in attendance. New officers were installed by Sister Virginia Fosket D.D. President and her staff. Brother Stubbendick was seated as P.N. Grand. Sister Eunice Becker was installed as Noble Grand; Sister Alice Harris, Vice Grand; Sister Gerene Williams, Secretary; Sister Virginia Fosket, Treasurer.
Other officers installed were: Warden, Jean West; Conductor, Donna Morse; L.S.N.G. Carol Schroeder; Chaplin, Ron York; Musician, Vena Pace; Color Bearer, Clarence Becker; R.S.V.G. Lela Embree; L.S.V.G. Luis Clark; Inside Guardian, Bub Clark; Outside Guardian, Dale Eddy; Color Bearer, Lucille Armstrong; Aids to P.N.G. Berniece Dixon and Joyce Hodtwalker; Aids to Chaplin, Maxine Failing and Avonne York.
Secretary Gerene Williams read the Assembly Presidents report in the cornhusker. Brother Ron York passed out a list to sign up for pies, for the Soup and Pie Supper at 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. March 2 to be held at the I.O.O.F. Hall.
The next meeting will be Feb. 8 and Eldora Speck and Carol Hansen will be the hosts.
Toastmasters at Principal
Speakers in January were Anita Lewandoski "World of Colors"; Kelly Ehlers-Hunter "Are You Listening?"; Brenda Kucera "Think B4U Wink"; Brook Sautter "White Out"; Cheryl Jones "A Doggie Year"; Georg Hood "Speech Styles"; Karla Schwieger-Arnold "My Favorite Things"; and Debbie Mittan "Is Oliver Human?"
Officer training was Feb. 9. Club contests for February are the International Speech contest or Table Topics. New members are Victoria Kathman, Sharyl Baldwin, Stacey Hoppes, and Mark Newton.
Toastmasters at Principal meet from noon to 1 p.m. each Wednesday at 3025 W. College. Guests are invited to attend. For information or questions, call Karla Schwieger-Arnold at 385-7233.
Gamma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma
The Gamma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a society for women educators, met on Jan. 19 at the I-80 Interstate Holiday Inn. President Betty Schmidt presided at the meeting. Rho State President, Roxie Lindquist, was a guest. She reminded the members of the Rho State Convention which will be held at the Leadership Development Center in Aurora on April 11 through 13. Members contributed a theme basket for a fund raiser at the State Convention.
Long time members were honored. Jolene Gardner brought snowmen to be raffled for World Fellowship.
Two women educators from Hastings were initiated at the November meeting; they were Lisa Cass, a resource teacher at Watson Elementary School; and Tricia Suchaland, a spanish teacher at Hastings Senior High School.
The next meeting will be March 15 at the I-80 Interstate Holiday Inn. Bob and Gwynne Kuhn will present the program.
Church Women United Board of Managers
The Church Women United Board of Managers met Feb. 1 at Faith United Methodist Church with Virginia White presiding. "God Works in Mysterious Ways" were given by Marise Hopkins.
World Day of Prayer information was given by Lois Scott. The celebration will be held at 9:30 a.m. March 7 at Messiah Lutheran Church. The program "God's Wisdom Provides New Understanding" will be given. Donna Cargill will have a shorter version of the program to be shown to nursing homes in the afternoon.
Geri Hoagland reminded members that she has blankets for display at "Blanket Sundays." Most representatives will have Blanket Sunday presentations in their churches during February.
Cargill read a brief history of the Grand Island Church Women United Unit. The next Board of Managers meeting will be held at 1:15 p.m. April 4 at First Christian Church.
Yakkity Yakkers Toastmaster
President Pam Clausen opened the Feb. 5 meeting with the pledge of allegiance, led a brief business meeting and gave guidance as word of the day.
Nancy Klimek was master of ceremonies and Norma Perkins-Bailey presented a joke.
Mary Dey practiced her speech, "Rebirth of Youth" to describe her book, "Talk to Your Children," and a compendium to be used for parent and teacher discussion groups. Clausen provided an evaluation.
In Perkins-Bailey speech, "The V.I.P. Success Path," she suggested to visualize, internalize and personalize goals for maximum success. Klimek presented an oral and written evaluation.
Perkins-Bailey will advise members of dates for the Toastmaster Leadership Training and spring speech contests. The District 24 Conference will be May 2 and 3 at Beatrice.
Yakkity Yakkers Toastmasters meets the first and third Tuesday each month from noon to 1 p.m. at the Center for Independent Living.
Ladies Platt Duetsche Society
Members of the Ladies Platt-Duetsche Society met Feb. 1 for their monthly luncheon, meeting, and cards.
A moment of silence was observed for departed member, Maybelle Stoltenberg. Initiated as new members were Jo Meyer and Ardis Wiese. Honorary birthdays for Feb. were recognized. Door prizes were awarded to Lois Obermeier, Lorraine Liebhart, Lorraine Oberschulte, Ingrid Girkout, and Doris Djernes.
Pitch winners were Carol Schroeder, Phyllis Johnson, Gloria Enyeart, Pat Frauen, Jean Jakob, Alice Spiehs, Martha Buettner, and Babe Bamesberger. Sheepshead winners were Dorothy Helmbrecht, Viola Ruff, Arlene Rohweder, Myrna Petzoldt, Georgena Frauen, and Della Mae Boltz.
Pinochle winners were Lorraine Liebhart, Micki Lowrey, and Imogene Williams. Double pinochle winners were Georgeann Tucker, Margaret Meyer, and Pat Miller.
The next meeting will be March 7. Off Fridays will be Feb. 15 and 29.

Platt Duetsch Colonial Double Pinochle Club
The Platt Duetsch Colonial Double Pinochle Club met Feb. 6 with 17 in attendance. Shirley Spencer has a birthday this month.
Door prizes were won by Jean Stalnaker, Dorothy Dahms, Viola Ruff, Irene Alder, Betty Rother, Bev Wolfe, Donna Speece, and Betty McMullen.
Card winners were Alder, Imogene Williams, Maxine Torgerson, Rother, McMullen, Speece, and Dahms.
The next meeting will be at noon March 5 at the Platt Duetsch.
Alpha Sigma Chapter 3812
Alpha Sigma, Chapter 3812 met Feb. 5 at Calvary Lutheran Church.
President Gloria Maisch called the meeting to order and the opening ritual was recited. Lynda Abshier gave the devotions entitled "Living Now".
Barb Ernest, Executive Director of Hope Harbor, presented the program. She spoke on the workings of the homeless shelter, its needs and goals. Lori Bendixen reported that funds from the Tour of Homes fundraiser has been distributed as follows: $5700 to the Nebraska Kidney Association, $3000 to The ARC and $300 to the Literacy Council.
The group discussed plans for the upcoming spring Style Show. The theme will be "Celebrating Life" and will be held April 21 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Net proceeds from the event will be given to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Tickets will be available at a later date.
The Chapter will be participating in the Yonkers Community Day Sale and tickets were distributed.
The February Social will be a Valentine's Day party with dinner at the Liederkranz. The next meeting will be March 3 at Calvary Lutheran Church.
Hall County VFW 1347
The Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW 1347 met Feb. 4. Membership is 143 annual members and 142 life members and they still need 18 to be at 100 percent. A discussion on Cancer Grants was held.
February is National Heart Month. An open house at the UVC will be on Feb. 29 and March 1. Members signed up to man the VFW auxiliary table.
The ladies did fingernails and made crafts at the NVH on Feb. 12. A Valentines Party will be today at the NVH. Also National Hospitalized Veteran Week is Feb. 10 through Feb. 16. Several ladies and gentlemen helped with the cooking of the annual Valentine Banquet on Feb. 14.
Gifts donated for the Blues Chaser Program at the NVH were collection. Donated gifts can also be brought to the March meeting. Mid Winter for the VFW & VFWA was in Kearney on Feb. 9 and today.
Jean Seely hosted coffee hour at the VAMC yesterday. The next meeting will be March 3. Elections for new officers will be in April.
Grand Island Area Graduate Home Economists
The Grand Island Area Graduate Home Economists met Feb. 4 at the Nebraska Veterans Home. A tour was given to the occupational therapy department. Members of the home are able to create ceramic and wood projects as well as quilts and Christmas stockings made from neckties. Hostesses were Mary Munch and Marge Balderston.
Bev Biggs was recognized for decorating a Christmas tree that represented the club at Stuhr Museum for 35 years.
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. March 5 at the Edith Abbott Library. A tour will be given of the new facility.
Betty Bunch
The Betty Bunch met at 12 p.m. Jan. 16 at Lee's Family Restaurant. Christmas gift and ornament exchange took place. Hostesses were Bettys Briggs, Shuman and Stanger. Door prizes were awarded to Bettys Barber, McMullen, Niedfelt and Rallens.
A short business discussion was held pertaining to future meetings and transportation to the 12th Annual Nebraska Bettys State Convention to be held on April 26 in Columbus.
The next meeting will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 20 at Tommy's Restaurant. Hostesses will be Bettys Briggs, Rallens and Shuman. Pie and Coffee and a Valentine exchange is the scheduled program.
