YORK Grand Island Northwest's Hadley Cooksley had only locked up with Hastings' Jon Uden for a few seconds when the Vikings' senior suddenly shoved his arms behind Uden, squeezed him in a vicious bear hug and threw his opponent on his back.

Like a cobra strike, it was over in a hurry. Cooksley sprung to his feet and gave the scoreboard a casual glance to check out the time on his handy work. This time it revealed a 16-second pin what's new?

"I usually go into my matches thinking I'm gong to wrestle longer, but sometimes they want to try to throw you around," Cooksley said with a slight grin. "In that case, I'm usually going to take them to their backs. I'm not going to play around."

Cooksley continued his season-long trend of making spectacular seem routine Saturday, winning the title in the 285-pound weight class at the Class B, District 3 meet. Despite weighing just 235 pounds, the No. 1-rated Cooksley will head into next week's state meet at Omaha 30-0 with 30 wins via fall.

The longest match Cooksley has had this season ended with 44 seconds left in the second period that coming against No. 2-rated Sandy Stanbeck of Boys Town. His quickest victory is a school-record five-second pin and he needed just 102 seconds combined to pin his three district opponents.

"Hadley is definitely the strongest kid I've ever coached," Northwest coach Brian Sybrandts said. "I don't even know who you could compare him to, strength-wise. It's hard to even explain how strong he is.

"He's just an amazing kid."

Cooksley's combination of strength, quickness and technique allowed him to further etch his name in the Northwest record books at the district meet. With his 31-second pin of Adams Central's Riley Larsen, he notched his 109th career victory, breaking the previous school record of 108 career wins held by Mike Leaman.

Getting to the top of the Vikings' all-time wins list is a goal Cooksley said he's harbored since he was a freshman.

"The record has been there for a long time and Mike Leaman was a hell of a wrestler he was a four-time state finalist so to be able to get his record means a lot," Cooksley said. "It just shows the years of consistency and hard work."

After finishing fifth and third, respectively, the last two years in the state meet at 215, Cooksley was expected to have a big senior season never mind the fact that he was moving up into the highest weight class. But even with the way he's dominated his opponents, Cooksley said his 30-for-30 success rate for pins in 2007-08 hasn't come as a big surprise, at least to him.

"I know how hard I've worked," Cooksley said. "I know the amount of time I've put in. I feel like I work harder than anyone else I wrestle and I've put in more time than anyone else.

"If you do that, you're going to have good results."

Even when your opponents typically outweigh you by 40 or 50 pounds?

"It's strength, quickness and technique," Cooksley said. "I can move a lot faster than most of the guys I wrestle, so I've got most of the tools in my bag."

Both Cooksley and his coach expect that he'll face significant challenges at state.

"I've definitely got a little bit more work to do," Cooksley said. "If I can win them all there, then I'll be happy."

Cooksley will be joined by five of his teammates at state, led by fellow district champion Nicholas Helmer (103). Jeff Mills (second at 160), Calvin Fye (third at 130), Dana Haines (third at 189) and Ben Paige (fourth at 145) also earned state berths with top-four district finishes.

"We're a little disappointed, but I think six is a good number," Sybrandts said. "I think we can do a lot of damage down there with six guys, but Class B has got a lot of tough teams, so we're really going to have to do some work."

The B-3 team title went to Central City, which outscored both Northwest and Aurora 200-129 to remain unbeaten. The No. 2-rated Bison will enter state with a 12-0 dual record and having won all 11 of their tournaments.

Central City qualified 11 wrestlers for state, led by district champs Kevin Smith (112), Logan Williams (119), Matthew Maresh (125), Kam Lenhart (130) and Myles Butt (160).

"We've talked about it all year long that every meet was a stepping stone and what he had done in the meets before was great, but this one was the one," Central City coach Darin Garfield said. "In order for us to accomplish what we want to next week, we had to take care of business this week and our kids came Friday and today ready to go and we couldn't ask for much more of them."

Aurora had seven state qualifiers, led by first-place finishes from Jerry Lobeda (152) and Dex Schwieger (215). Hastings' David Gonzalez (135), Kip Kiplinger (171) and Ethan Rundle (189) all won district titles.
