Lopers win 10 events, add national qualifiers
KEARNEY The Nebraska-Kearney track and field team had 38 top-four finishes and won 10 events at the Chadron State Invitational Saturday.
The Lopers also had several runners compete at the NU Adidas Classic in Lincoln on Saturday.
At Chadron, the non-team scoring meet included the Eagles, Chadron alumni, Black Hills State (S.D.) and South Dakota Mines. This was the first time UNK had traveled to CSC for a regular-season meet.
Leading the way were throwers Kiley Peterson (Gothenburg) and Julie Davis (Palmer), who each earned NCAA provisional marks in the shot put. Peterson placed third with a toss of 43-10 with Davis coming in fourth at 43-7.75. Davis also was fourth in the weight throw (43.5.75).
Kearney junior Kelli Dring had another busy day, winning both the long (18-4.50) and triple (36-4.75) jumps while placing fourth in the high jump.
The long jump also saw Jennifer Fritson finish second (17-7) and Heather Wills third (17-5.25). Wills (Curtis) was also third in the triple jump at 35-8.
On the track, Fritson (Minden) was runner up at 55 meters (7.54) with Sidney freshman Jessie Golden winning the 55 hurdles in a time of 8.66. Golden also helped UNK place fourth through six in the 200 and led the way with a 27.22. Finally, Ogallala senior Shayna Fruit won the high jump by clearing 5-7.
The Loper men won six events at Chadron, with Kearney senior Ross Fellows claiming the gold in both the long (23-0.50) and triple (46-7.50) jumps. UNK did very well in these two events, placing one through three in the long jump and having four of the top five finishers in the triple jump.
Also in field events, Kearney freshman Blake Millsap tied for first in the high jump by clearing 6-6.25 with throwers Chris Campbell (shot put/50-10) and Brandon Karlin (weight throw/58-10) each finishing second.
On the track, sophomore Cody Klein led the way by winning at 55 meters (6.43 seconds) and then placing third in the 200 (23.14). UNK also was fourth and fifth in the 200 and had the third and fourth place finishers in the 55.
North Platte senior Josh Hofer won the 400 (50.67) with the 4x400 relay team coming home with a first place finish in a time of 3:27.85. Finally, York senior Darrel Branz was runner up in the 55 hurdles (7.81).

No. 2-ranked Nebraska knocks off Oklahoma, 21-9
LINCOLN The No. 2-ranked Husker wrestling teamclaimed the final three matches of its dual with No. 18 Oklahoma to win 21-9 in front of more than 1,300 fans at the NU Coliseum on Saturday.
Nebraska improved to 12-2 on the year, including a perfect 3-0 in the Big 12, while the Sooners dropped to 12-5 overall and 0-4 in conference meets.
NU won seven of the 10 contested matches in a dual that started at 157 pounds. The turning point came at 133 pounds as sophomore Kenny Jordan earned a come-from-behind win to stop a Sooner rally. Oklahoma's Brian Shelton scored an early takedown to take a 2-0 lead, but Jordan battled back with two takedowns in the third period to claim an 11-4 decision.
The Huskers honored their lone senior before the dual as part of Senior Day and NU's Jon May gave the fans what they came for with a 6-3 decision over Oklahoma's Nathan Fernandez at heavyweight. May notched two takedowns and had a 1:37 riding-time advantage to finish his final home dual with a win.
The upset of the night came at 197 pounds as NU's Craig Brester won a 6-1 decision over Joel Flaggert. Brester, asophomore,entered the match ranked No. 10 in the nation to Flaggert's No. 5 ranking. Brester was the aggressor the whole match as Flaggert was penalized twice for stalling. The win improves Brester to 10-3 in duals this year.
Brandon Browne (174), Stephen Dwyer (165) and Jordan Burroughs (149) all recorded wins for the Huskers as every match was decided by a decision. Browne, a junior,improves his overall record to 26-2 to lead the Huskers in wins, while Burroughs, a sophomore,has an 11-3 dual record this season.
NU finished itshome season witha perfect 4-0 record in the NU Coliseum as the Huskerswent undefeated at home for the first time since 2003-04.
Nebraska hits the road for its final three duals of the season. The Huskers travel east to face Rider at noon on Feb. 16 and No. 16 Hofstra at noon on Feb. 17, before squaring off against No. 8 Iowa State in Ames on Feb. 24.

Denver upsets Nebraska men in dual meet
LINCOLN After a tough fought loss to Iowa on Friday, the No. 61 Nebraska men's tennis team was upset by No. 66 Denver on Sunday 5-2 at the Nebraska Tennis Center.
The Huskers lost to their second straight ranked opponent and fall to 2-2, while the Pioneers improved to 5-1.
The men hit the courts again next weekend with three home matches on three consecutive days, on Friday against UT-San Antonio, Saturday against DePaul and Sunday against Drake.

Husker women remain undefeated, sweep Wyoming
LINCOLN The Nebraska women's tennis team remains undefeated in the spring after a 7-0 sweep of the Wyoming Cowgirls on Sunday at the Nebraska Tennis Center.
The Huskers move to 5-0 with the victory, while the Cowgirls fall to 3-3. The Huskers are off to one of their best starts in team history with their fifth consecutive sweep to open the season.
The Huskers will try to extend their historic start to the season next weekend with two more home matches, on Friday, Feb. 15 against Saint Louis and the next day against Central Oklahoma.
