NU has 296 earn spots on Big 12 honor roll



LINCOLN An impressive list of 298 Nebraska student-athletes across all sports claimed spots on the Big 12 Commissioner'sFall Academic Honor Roll released on Wednesday,Feb. 13. Among the 298 student-athletes who achieved 3.0 or better grade-point averages during the semester,35 Huskers posted perfect 4.0 GPAs.

Nebraska's approach to recruiting the nation's finest student-athletes yielded a remarkably diverse contingent offall academic honorees that included representatives of31 U.S. states and 16 foreign countries, including honor roll members from four Canadian provinces. Husker honor roll members also came to Nebraska from Australia, Belgium, Brazil, China, Croatia, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Jamaica, Latvia, Mexico, Scotland,South Africa andSweden.

The Huskers' Big 12 Commissioner'sFall Academic Honor Roll class also carried a distinct state flavor with 114 native Nebraskans among the 298 award winners.

TheNebraska football team continued to shine in the classroom with 39 Huskers earning positions on thefall honor roll. Six football players posted perfect 4.0 GPA semesters, including Brett Byford, Wes Cammack,Thomas Grove, Ryan Hill, Jay Martin and Patrick Witt.

Along with a strong contingent from the football team,Coach Gary Pepin'sNebraska men's and women's track and field and cross country programs contributeda massive 89 members to the honor roll, including 52 men and 37 women. On the men's side,Anthony Oberle, Ben Schutter, Bryce Somer and Issar Yazhbinproduced 4.0 grade-point averages during the fall, whileJoslyn Dalton, Betsy Miller and KimShubert, Kayla Ubel and Natalie Willeradded perfect semesters on the women's side. Among the track and field honorees, Coach Jay Dirksen's men's and women's cross country squads produced 25 academic honorees, including four athletes with 4.0 semesters.

Coach Pablo Morales' NU swimming and diving squad added 26fall academic honorees, including 4.0 semesters fromKaitlin Arntz, Lauren Bailey, Kate Wheeler and Sarah Ziegelmann.

Coach John Walker's Nebraska soccer team alsocontinued its growingsuccess in the classroom with 23 Huskers posting better than 3.0 GPAs, including4.0 semesters from Anna Caniglia and Jaclyn White.

Coach Mike Anderson's Nebraska baseball teamhad another solid semester in the classroom, with 16 Huskers earning spots on the Big 12Fall Academic Honor Roll, while Coach Francis Allen's men's gymnastics team added 13 members to the group.

The Nebraska volleyball teamcontributed 11 players to the honor roll, including four of Coach John Cook'sBig 12 champion Huskerswith4.0 grade-point averages. Sarah Pavan,a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year and an NCAA Top Eight Award winner, posted a perfect 4.0 GPA, whileCoSIDA First-Team Academic All-Americans Christina Houghtelling and Tracy Stalls added perfect semesters. Amanda Gatesalso posted a 4.0 semester during the fall.

Coach Doc Sadler's men's basketball teamproduced a stellar semester in the classroom with 10 Huskers earning spots on the honor roll. Coach Rhonda Revelle's Husker softball teamadded 10 fall honor roll members, led by a 4.0 semester from pitcher Molly Hill.

Coach Robin Krapfl's Husker women's golf team added another outstanding performance in the classroom,with ninegolfers earning honor roll spots,led byKate White and Rachel Hanigan, who posted perfect 4.0 GPA semesters.

The Nebraska wrestling team, led by Coach Mark Manning, contributedeight student-athletes to the Huskerfall academic honor roll, as did Coach Kerry McDermott's men's tennis team, including a 4.0 semester for Joerg Barthel.

Coach Connie Yori's women's basketball team added seven honor roll selections to the group, as did Coach Morgan Hicks' NU rifle team, including perfect semesters from Katie Harrington, Ryann McGough and Kirsten Weiss.

Coach Bill Spangler's men's golf squad added six honor roll members, including a perfect 4.0 semester from Brett Sundberg, while Coach Scott Jacobson's women's tennis team also contributed six honorees, led by 4.0 semesters from Imke Reimers and Ashley Finnegan. Coach Dan Kendig's women's gymnastics team also featured six honor roll selections, while Coach Bill Straub's bowling team contributed five honor roll members.
