If you know a little magic, can dance, carry a tune, play a tuba or have other hidden talents, it may just win you a C note $100, that is.
Grand Island's Community Youth Council is sponsoring its third annual Youth in the Spotlight talent contest Feb. 24 at the Conestoga Mall. The top prize in each of three age groups is $100. Second prize is $75 and third place is $50.
There's also a lot of great non-cash prizes and a raffle for gift certificates, sunglasses and a printer, contest co-chairwoman Sammy Saiyavongsa said.
"Everybody gets a prize and is rewarded in some way or another," she said.
The three divisions are elementary (kindergarten through fifth grade), middle (sixth through eighth grades) and high school (ninth through 12th grades).
More than 30 contestants have signed up so far.
"It's for the youth of the community to have something to do and show off their talent," Saiyavongsa said.
The registration fee is $10 and is open through the day of the event.
In past years, contestants have performed magic, played the piano, sung, played guitar or band instruments, tap-danced and even hula-hooped, contest committee member Sarah Kuta said.
There's a five-minute time limit to show off the talent. Those performing to music should provide two copies of the music CD at registration.
A member of the Grand Island City Council, a member of the Community Youth Council and a high school teacher will judge the event.
Kuta said the contest started when responses to youth surveys indicated that Grand Island youths wanted some type of safe and entertaining outlet instead of turning to alcohol or drugs out of boredom.
The contest brings the fine arts and creativity of Grand Island youths to the community, she said.
"It's also to build self-esteem," Kuta said of the event.
