Bellevue University celebrates 2008 winter commencement
Bellevue University awarded 1,569 undergraduate and graduate degrees during its winter commencement. Of those graduates, 765 were online students.
Bellevue University offers 24 bachelor's degree programs and 12 master's degree programs online, with more in development.

Doane College announce fall Dean's List
CRETE Doane College has announced students named to the Dean's List for the fall semester.
Students must achieve a minimum 3.7 grade point average on a 4.0 scale to qualify for the list.

Joseph's College names January honor students
Hope Anderson was named student of the month for January at Joseph's College of Beauty in Grand Island.
Named to the honor roll for the month (94 percent and above) were Anderson, Tonia Fangmeier, Whitney Flinn, Imelda Garcia and Deanna Hopkins.
Other honors for the month went to Fangmeier, high retail sales; Anderson, high GPA and high credits for the month.
Achieving perfect attendance for January were Anderson, Fangmeier, Garcia, Flinn and Kayla Stoltenberg. Fangmeier and Flinn were also recognized for having perfect attendance for the entire enrollment.
CCC instructors earn certifications
Barbara Mundt McGraw of Grand Island and Colleen Burchell Quadhamer of Minden have earned the Certified Nurse Educator designation after successfully completing a certification program and examination developed and administered by the National League for Nursing. Both McGraw and Quadhamer are employed by Central Community College.
McGraw has been a nursing instructor at the Grand Island Campus since 1991. She is a registered nurse who earned her diploma from St. Francis School of Nursing, a bachelor of science degree in nursing from the University of Nebraska at Kearney and a master of science degree in nursing from Clarkson College in Omaha. She and her husband, Leland McGraw III, have two sons.
Quadhamer joined the college's Kearney Center staff as a nursing instructor in 1978 and became the nursing program coordinator in 1995. She is a registered nurse who earned her diploma from the St. Francis School of Nursing, a bachelor of science degree in biology from UNK and a master of science degree in nursing from Clarkson College in Omaha. She and her husband, Steve, have three children and three grandchildren.
UNK students to present 'The Gypsy's Curse'
KEARNEY The University of Nebraska at Kearney Department of Music and Performing Arts will present the melodrama "The Gypsy's Curse" on Wednesday, Feb. 20, through Sunday, Feb. 24, in the Miriam Drake Theatre.
Cast members from Central Nebraska include Derrick Morrison as Pinkham and Courtney Zook as Olio, Grand Island;
Amy Jensen as Maude Prunepitt and Danell Will as Hortense Lovelace, Kearney; and Ryan Hruza as Wolfgang Von Schlemiel, Ord.
The crew includes Ben Chambers of Grand Island, assistant stage manager; and Katy Fagiolo of Hastings, stage manager.
Show times are 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
Nebraskats show choir plans performances
KEARNEY The University of Nebraska at Kearney Nebraskats show choir will perform at North Loup/Scotia, Ord and Broken Bow high schools on Monday, Feb. 25.
Membership in Nebraskats is by competitive audition. Members from Central Nebraska are Michelle Conley, Patrick York and Phillip Zuehlke of Grand Island; Brittany Davidson of Hastings; and Tray Henricksen, Clifford Holman and Mary Lanka of Kearney.
The Nebraskats band includes Noor Ghamedi, guitar, and Miles Margritz, drums, both of Kearney.
Hastings students picked for honor band
HASTINGS Eight Hastings College students have been selected to participate in the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association intercollegiate honor band.
Musicians were selected from a pool of students nominated by their college's band directors.
Hastings College students from Central Nebraska chosen include junior Anna Govier of Grand Island, clarinet; senior Tony Fagiolo of Hastings, oboe; and junior Abby Necker of Hordville, bass clarinet.
The ensemble will perform Feb. 29 in the Kimball Recital Hall at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The concert is part of the 47th annual Nebraska State Bandmasters Association conference.
Academic honors
Fifty-four students from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Pharmacy were named to the Fall 2007 dean's list. Area students include: Taylor Haymart of Aurora, Margaret P. Kucera of Burwell, Katherine Frost and Jennifer Novotny of Grand Island, Chad Bartholomew and Megan Nelson of Ord and Jennifer Nesiba of St. Paul.
Nathan Anderson of Clarks, Emily Griess of Grand Island, Ryan Paul Boesch of Hastings and Cedric Reilly Wichmann of St. Paul have all been recognized for outstanding academic achievement by being named to the 2007 fall semester Dean's List at Iowa State University in Ames.
Eric Fattig of Kearney has been named to the University of Kansas Athletic Director's Honor Roll for 2007. He is a senior at KU studying engineering physics. Fattig is a Kearney High School graduate and son to Bruce and Ann Fattig.
Laura Kjar of Wood River has been has been named to the Peru State College Dean's List for the 2007 fall semester. To earn a place on the Dean's List, students must have a grade point average of 3.75 or higher for the semester, have completed 12 college credit hours during the past semester and have no incomplete grades for the semester.
Johnna Jeffries of Grand Island and Kara Riskowski of Ord both have been named tot he University of Wyoming Dean's and Freshman Honor Roll for the 2007 fall semester.
Laura Leisinger has been named to the Wichita State University Dean's List for the 2007 fall semester. She is majoring in theater and exercise science. Leisinger is the daughter of Scott and Joan Leisinger.
Jeremy Lucas has been named to the Dean's List at Devry University for the 2007 semester. Lucas is majoring in computer technology. He is the son of Leon and Mary Lucas of Grand Island.
Christina Ewald has been recognized for outstanding academic achievement for the 2007 fall semester at Grand View College in Des Moines, Iowa.
Activities
Brad Green and Rachel Hernandez of Grand Island were among the 16 UNK Student Diplomats named the University of Nebraska at Kearney Department for January. These undergraduate students serve as representatives of the institution and interact with visiting potential students and their families by leading daily, informative campus tours and assist Undergraduate Admissions staff during recruitment events throughout the year.
Renee Mathews, yearbook advisor at Peru State College came in second place for American Scholastic Press Association Top-Scoring Yearbooks for 2007 and Advisors and received an award certificate. Mathews is the daughter of Dale and Shirley Roberts of Grand Island.
Sarah Wirth of Grand Island and a junior at Creighton University has been inducted into the Order of Omega, Greek Honor Society, and Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society. Wirth has also started her first year as president of Phi Beta Phi Sorority at Creighton. Wirth is a premed student majoring in chemistry and spanish and is the daughter of Dr. Don and Denise Wirth.
Robin Seim of Chapman will be part of a 70-member Concordia University A Cappella Choir to perform at high schools, churches and concert halls during its spring tour March 12 to 18.
Lindsey Ann Shoemaker of Grand Island will be part of the Kansas University's Concert Choir to perform Feb. 22 in the Folly Theater in Kansas City, Mo. Shoemaker is the daughter of Stephen and Zelda Shoemaker of Grand Island.
Michelle Schultz of Grand Island was among Chadron State College's Winter Magic Formal royalty. Schultz is a junior studying dental hygiene and is the daughter of Thomas Schultz and Robbie Snyder. She was nominated for the competition by the CSC Health Professions Club.
Kimberley Newcomb of Grand Island is participating in the Cooperative Education Program at Central Community College-Grand Island. Newcomb, an early childhood education major, is working as an infant room teacher at St. Pauls Christian Child Care Center in Grand Island. Newcomb is a 2005 graduate of Northwest High School and the daughter of Karen Newcomb of Grand Island and George Newcomb of Lincoln.
Graduates
George D. Allen of Alda and Adam J. Carlson of Silver Creek earned degrees from Northwest Missouri State University during fall 2007 trimester. Allen has earned a bachelor of technology in agriculture; and Carlson has earned a bachelor of science in wildlife ecology and conservation.
Lindsay Jarzynka of Grand Island has graduated with a master in arts degree from Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo.
Scholarships
David J. Choul of Grand Island is among 13 Nebraskans who will share more than $50,000 in renewable Reaching Your Potential scholarships from EducationQuest Foundation. Choul will use scholarship to pursue an associate's degree in Business Administration at Central Community College.
Dixie Codner of Shelton has received a $1,000 Library Technical Assistant Scholarship from the Nebraska Library Commission. The scholarship was established with the help of a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services for recruiting and educating the next generation of librarians. Codner is a library assistant at Central Community College-Hastings, where she is also working toward her LTA associate degree.
