The Central Catholic Speech Team won the Centennial Conference Championship at the tournament Feb. 9 at David City Aquinas High School.
Central Catholic's championship featured six first place championships.
Junior Hannah Davis won first place in the humorous prose event. Senior Tim Dvorak earned first place in extemporaneous speaking.
Sophomores Maegan Kellogg, MiKayla Northup and Alysia Strong took the championship in oral interpretation of drama.
Senior Laura Wirth won the championship in persuasive speaking.
Second place finishes were earned by Dvorak, entertainment speaking; Junior Sammy Saiyavongsa, persuasive speaking; Wirth, informative public address; and Senior MaKayla Jones, poetry.
Juniors Jeremy Hansen, Katie Harris, Cody and Jacob Nordhues placed third in oral interpretation of drama.
Third place individual finishes went to Freshman Grace Mohr in extemporaneous speaking and informative, and to Nordhues in humorous.
Fourth place finishes were taken by Davis, entertainment; Sophomores Sophie Foster and Catherine McGowan, duet acting; Harris, serious prose; Nathan LaBrie, humorous; Sophomore Rachel Moore, informative; Freshman Callie Newman, poetry; and Freshman Arena Govier, extemporaneous.
Fifth place medals went to Sophomore Wes Gratopp, humorous; LaBrie, entertainment; Sophomore Joey Starkey, extemporaneous; Jones, persuasive.
Sixth place finishes went to Govier, informative; Jared Hashberger, poetry; Sarah Merithew, serious prose.
The Central Catholic Speech Team also won 32 medals at the second of two Central Nebraska Forensic League Tournaments hosted by Grand Island Senior High School. Thirty schools from all classes participated.
Central Catholic Senior Laura Wirth earned the first-place varsity championship in informative public address.
The oral interpretation of drama team of Jeremy Hansen, Katie Harris, Cody and Jacob Nordhues took fourth place in that event.
Other Central Catholic competitors winning varsity medals were: Wirth, seventh in serious prose; Hannah Davis, seventh in entertainment speaking; the team of Maegan Kellogg, MiKayla Northup and Alysia Strong, ninth in oral interpretation of drama; Wirth, ninth in persuasive speaking; Ryan Stimson, tenth in humorous prose; Stimson and Sammy Saiyavongsa, 11th in duet acting; Saiyavongsa in persuasive speaking, Jacob Nordhues in humorous prose, and Harris in poetry, 14th place medals.
In novice competition, Catherine McGowan and Sophie Foster captured the championship in duet acting.
The team of Callie Newman, Michael Pfeifer and Adam Suganuma took second place in oral interpretation of drama.
Other Central Catholic team members earning novice competition medals were: Rachel Moore, third in persuasive speaking; Suganuma, third in entertainment speaking; Newman, fifth in poetry; Clay Pfeifer, eighth in extemporaneous speaking; Lauren Cantrell, ninth in serious prose; Nikki Kohles and Jessica Meis, ninth in duet acting; Grace Mohr, ninth in extemporaneous speaking; Moore, tenth in informative public address; Kohles, tenth in humorous prose.
Superior performance ribbons went to: MiKayla Northup and Alysia Strong in varsity duet acting; Nathan LaBrie in varsity entertainment and humorous; Hannah Davis in varsity humorous; MaKayla Jones in varsity persuasive and poetry; Sarah Merithew in varsity serious prose; Katie Harris in varsity serious prose; Arena Govier in novice extemporaneous and informative; and Grace Mohr in novice informative.
