No. 6 Northwestern rallies past Nebraska
Tempe, Ariz. - A series of bad breaks and a strong Northwestern offense proved too much for the Nebraska softball team to overcome, as the sixth-ranked Wildcats scored four runs in the decisive sixth inning to erase a two-run deficit and rally for an 8-6 victory over the Huskers in the final game of the Kajikawa Classic.
A pair of questionable calls gave Northwestern three runs in the bottom of the third inning and the Wildcats led 4-2 heading to the sixth inning despite not scoring an earned run. The Husker offense then came alive as juniors Crystal Carwile and Haley Long belted two-run homers in the span of four batters to power Nebraska to a 6-4 lead.
The lead would not hold up, however, as timely situational hitting fueled Northwestern's four-run sixth inning that provided the final 8-6 margin. The undefeated Wildcats improved to 4-0 on the season, including victories over No. 1 Arizona and No. 3 Texas A&M.
Freshman Tori Tyson (1-2) suffered the loss in just her third career start and her second straight against a top-10 foe.
Late Saturday night, Nebraska fell to the Memphis Tigers 7-3 in the nightcap of day two at the Kajikawa Classic.
Sophomore right-hander Alex Hupp (0-2) took the loss for Nebraska, which fell to 1-3 on the season. In a complete-game effort, Hupp struck out a career-best 10 batters, but also surrendered a career-high seven earned runs, including allowing a career-high three.
Heidi Folland, a freshman shortstop from Grand Island, went 1-for 3 with a run scored for the Huskers.

Nebraska-Kearney men get key win at Christian
LAKEWOOD, Colo. - All five starters for the Nebraska-Kearney men's basketball team scored in double figures to help the Lopers record a big win over Colorado Christian, 75-68, Saturday night in Lakewood, Colo.
UNK (13-12, 11-6 RMAC) stopped a two-game losing streak and beat the Cougars (16-9, 13-4 RMAC) for the 18th straight time, dating back to early in the 1999-00 season.
The win also helps UNK stay in the running for an RMAC Tournament home game. Fort Lewis (15-2) and CCU pretty much have the first two seeds locked up with the Lopers, Adams State (11-6), Metro State (10-7) and Western New Mexico (10-7) battling for the third and fourth seeds.
The key spurt late in the game included two 3-pointers from freshman Jeremy Cruise (St. Edward) and back-to-back buckets by sophomore center Josiah Parker (Lincoln).
Sophomore Jeff Martin (Bellevue West) sealed the deal with two made free throws at the 26 second mark, making it a 74-68 Lopers.
Cruise once again was a thorn in the side of CCU as he scored a team-high 19 points on 7 of 10 (3 of 5 threes) shooting. In the Lopers 71-67 win over Christian on January 31st, Cruise had a season-best 22 points.
Martin netted 16 points on 5 of 11 shooting with sophomore Drake Beranek (Ravenna) at 12 points and seven rebounds. Finally, Parker had 10, as did freshman guard Garret Lever (Phoenix).
UNK hosts Regis and Colorado Springs next weekend.
Loper women secure RMAC East Division title
LAKEWOOD, Colo. Senior Amy Mathis scored a career-high 28 points and junior Jade Meads added 24 as the Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team won at Colorado Christian, 93-76, Saturday night in Lakewood, Colo.
Winners of six straight, UNK improved to 22-5 (15-2 RMAC) and secured the East Division title. Second-place Metro State is currently 12-5 with only two regular season games remaining.
After scoring 63 points in its last two games, the Lopers reached 90 points for the fifth time this year by shooting 56 percent from the field and making 23 free throws.
Earlier this year in Nebraska, UNK also scored 93 against Christian.
Mathis (Millard North), who tallied 27 earlier this year at Regis, scored 20 points in the second half and finished 9 of 12 from the field (6 of 7 threes) and 4 of 4 at the line.
