The Noteables Jazz Ensemble, a 10-piece "little big band," will perform Wednesday evening at Grand Island Senior High.

The Noteables is one of eight component ensembles under the auspices of The United States Air Force Heartland of America Band at Offut Air Force Base in Omaha.

The Noteables Jazz Ensemble is described as a "sleek, vibrant jazz ensemble" that will present a program of "exciting, uplifting music inspiring audiences to increased patriotism."

During its existence, The Noteables Jazz Ensemble has appeared in concert and on national television with Bob Hope, jazz trumpeter Bobby Shew, composer/arranger Frank Mantooth, former Tonight Show band leader Doc Severinsen, and pop singer Lee Greenwood.

Admission to the concert is free, but capacity is limited to number of seats in the Senior High auditorium. As of late Monday afternoon, a few more than 300 tickets were still available for the concert.

Spokeswoman Linda Wilhelmy said tickets can be picked up in advance at The Independent during regular business hours.

If tickets are still available, they also can be picked up at the door. Wilhelmy noted the concert starts at 7 p.m., but doors will not open until 6 p.m.

The show will be selected from among numbers that include both fresh arrangements of jazz standards, such as "Bye, Bye, Blackbird" by Ray Henderson and "Stompin' at the Savoy" by Glenn Miller and patriotic music such as "America the Beautiful" and "Services Medley."

Other possible selections include songs such as "Adversity" and "Unfailing Kindness," written by modern-day jazz composer Chie Imaizumi.

Four Senior High musicians will sit in with The Noteables on one song. Students who will play with the group are Levi Benson, trombone; Alecia McMahon, alto sax; Ryne Miller, tenor sax; and Jennifer Schneider, guitar.

Staff Sgt. Christopher M. Stelling of Kearney is one of three saxophone players for the group, which includes 10 musicians and vocalist Staff Sgt. Krista Joyce of Harleton, Texas.

Capt. Michael Willen assumed command of the United States Air Force Heartland of America Band in October 2007.

Capt. Willen comes to the band from The USAF Band at Bolling AFB, DC, where he served as the Squadron Section Commander.

Vocalist Krista Joyce studied music education at East Texas Baptist University before earning a bachelor of music education degree at Ouachita Baptist University.

She entered the U.S. Air Force in 1996 and began her career with the Band of the Air Force Reserve at Robins Air Force Base, Georgia. While there, she performed with High Flight, the Jazz Ensemble and the Concert Band. While stationed in Germany, Joyce also performed with The Ambassadors Jazz Ensemble.
