To help boost blood supplies, the American Red Cross is giving blood donors a free movie pass if they recruit a new blood donor to donate blood or platelets during February at any participating blood donation center.

During the winter months, due to bad weather and the flu, it's hard to get people to come in to donate, said Danelle Schlegelmilch, communications and public relations specialist.

The blood supply is stable, with about a three- to five-day supply. However, supplies of types O negative and A negative are low, with about a one-day supply, Schlegelmilch said.

To be eligible for a free movie ticket, blood donors and their friends must complete a Bring-A-Friend card, must both donate blood during February of this year, and the friend must be a new blood donor or someone who hasn't donated since Jan. 1, 2006.

Once both donate blood and turn in the cards, they will each receive a free pass to see a movie of their choice.

It is not required that the donor and friend give blood on the same day or at the same location, but both donors do need to give blood at a participating location during February.

The movie ticket promotion and Bring-A-Friend redemption cards are available at the Central Plains Chapter of the American Red Cross, located at 404 E. Third St. in Grand Island.
