Cornhuskers place 39 on Big 12 honor roll
A total of 39 current and former members of the Nebraska football team were among 298 Nebraska student-athletes named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Fall Honor Roll after earning a grade-point average of 3.0 or better during the fall semester. Of the group, 22 players were repeat selections to the Commissioner's Honor Roll.
Among the 39 football players, six posted perfect 4.0 grade-point averages in the fall semester including Brett Byford, Wes Cammack, Thomas Grove, Ryan Hill, Jay Martin and Patrick Witt.
J.B. Phillips, a senior tight end in 2007, earned recognition on the Commissioner's Honor Roll for the ninth straight semester.
Phillips, a two-time CoSIDA All-District selection, completed his undergraduate degree in December of 2006 and is nearly completion of his master's degree. Senior fullback Andy Sand made the honor roll for the eighth time in his Nebraska career, and six Huskers earned the honor for the seventh time, including seniors Lance Brandenburgh and Josh Mueller, and juniors Andy Christensen, Todd Peterson, Dan Titchener and Tyler Wortman.
Peterson and Wortman are Grand Island Central Catholic graduates.
Nebraska also had an impressive showing on the Commissioner's Fall Honor Roll by its freshman class. Overall, 13 true freshmen were named to the list, including Grove, Hill, Martin and Witt, who all earned 4.0 grade-point averages in the fall semester.
