The words of Delmi Euceda Calderon's protection order request are chilling.
"He scares me because, every time he gets mad, he says he's going to kill me and then he will kill himself," she wrote in the document, which was filed in Hall County District Court on July 2, 2007.
The protection order Calderon had against Jesus Flores-Garcia, 26, was still in place when he cut her throat before taking his own life Wednesday.
They were found at Calderon's apartment, 2222 Bellwood Drive, Apt. 80, just after noon Wednesday. Police had been summoned to the residence on the report of an assault, Grand Island Police Chief Steve Lamken said.
Calderon, 32, was deceased when officers arrived. Flores-Garcia had "self-inflicted cutting" wounds to his upper body. It appears that a "couple of different instruments" were used in the deaths, Hall County Attorney Mark Young said.
Young and Lamken spoke at a press conference Thursday afternoon.
Flores-Garcia was taken to St. Francis Medical Center, where he was declared dead on Wednesday, Lamken said.
"He has kicked me, slapped me," Calderon wrote. "What scares me the most is that now he has a gun and gets it out every time he gets mad."
The threatening statements she described occurred on June 30, 2007, after she had gone to a church revival. She wrote that Flores-Garcia, whom she described as "my partner," got upset and sexually assaulted her as she tried to get ready for work.
On another occasion, they were in a vehicle together and he threatened to hurt her. She jumped out of the moving car and started running. He followed her, and she asked him not to kill her and promised not to report the incident.
Calderon also wrote about a March 5, 2007, incident. She was celebrating her daughter's birthday with her nephew. Flores-Garcia started an argument, she threw him out of the apartment and her nephew called police.
"I got scared because he said he was going to kill my nephew," she wrote. "He threatens me and says the last thing I'll see is him, and he swears that the gun he bought is for me and, after he kills me, he's going to Mexico 'cause no one can find him there."
There were no witnesses to the deaths, and Young said he was unsure of who called police.
Authorities believe the incident occurred sometime Wednesday morning. Evidence at the scene and letters found in Flores-Garcia's apartment in Crete indicate he killed Calderon before taking his own life, Young said.
"Law enforcement took every step they could to protect her," Young said. "This is the type of case that is a call to action. We need to take terroristic threats and protection-order violations seriously."
Autopsies are being done, and Young said he will make his final declarations regarding the deaths once the procedures are complete. As county attorney, Young also serves as county coroner.
Calderon is survived by a 4-year-old daughter, who, according to the protection order document, wasn't Flores-Garcia's child.
Flores-Garcia, who formerly lived at 321 Cardinal Drive in Grand Island, had four cases pending against him in Hall County, three of which involved Calderon as a victim, Young said.
Flores-Garcia was scheduled to be sentenced for stalking Calderon, who is identified as Delmi Euceda in court papers, in Hall County Court on April 11. The incident occurred on Oct. 2, 2007. According to the court file, Flores-Garcia pleaded no contest to the charge. In exchange, a charge of false imprisonment and violation of a protection order were dismissed.
He posted a 10 percent of $5,000 bond and was ordered not to have any contact with Calderon.
A second case pending in Hall County Court was also scheduled for sentencing on April 11. In that case, Flores-Garcia was charged with carrying a concealed knife for a Dec. 13, 2007, incident. Young said the case involved Flores-Garcia carrying a knife when he came to the courthouse for a hearing.
Two other cases were set for April trials in district court. They involved charges of terroristic threats, willful reckless driving and violation of a protection order for a Sept. 30, 2007, incident, and terroristic threats and violation of a protection order for an Aug. 28, 2007, incident. Both cases involved felonies and listed Calderon as the victim.
Flores-Garcia posted a bond of 10 percent of $15,000 on Nov. 26, 2007, in county court to be released in the felony cases. The one bond applied to both cases, according to court records.
