The government should listen to the public
Although not a veteran, I plead with all citizens to request that the preliminary sheet regarding stimulus checks have two boxes of which you mark one. An example might be as follows:
MARK ONE
q I wish to spend my stimulus check.
OR
q I wish to have my stimulus check to go to our veterans.
Even though the stimulus bill has passed, this is merely a divided distribution as determined by the recipient. I seems that this is the least the American public could do for those who risked their life and health while the rest of us did no more that watch and form opinions.
The ratings of the administration and Congress are very low, but perhaps they could at least make a volunteer box for our abused veterans who are also deprived. Could the government listen to the public once? It costs no more.

Caucus was enlightening process
I recently had the privilege of participating in the Nebraska Democratic Caucus process, with one result being that my picture was included in the Saturday issue of The Independent. While in Lincoln last weekend, I received a phone call from a man who had read the paper and had questions regarding an issue he was unclear about regarding Sen. Obama. He was asking me for clarification about the issue. I told him that I would be glad to call him back when I returned to Grand Island. Thanks to my son-in-law, I was able to find the information he wanted but inadvertently erased his name and number from my cell phone. If he should read this letter, this is what I would tell him: there are two Web sites that I believe will give him what he seeks. They are thinkonthesethings.wordpress.com and aboutobama.blogspot.com. Both sites are slanted in favor of Barack Obama.
I am pleased that people are truly seeking for the truth about candidates. We hear too often the sensational, often unsubstantiated "bits" and "bytes" that flood the media and cloud the real issues during this important time of discernment about who's to lead us forward. The caucus was enlightening and encouraging. I hope the enthusiasm continues right through Nov. 10.

Stay home if roads are dangerous
This letter is in response to Lindsay Jean Roetzel's letter of February 20, 2008, "Roads too dangerous for school."
If you felt that the roads were too dangerous for driving to school on 1/29 and 2/5, you could have stayed home. A parent has the right to keep their son or daughter at home if they feel it would be unsafe for them to go to school.
You stated in your letter that you could be a student at any one of the Grand Island high schools. You also implied in your letter that all the schools handled the bad weather in the same manner. I don't remember what the other schools did on the bad weather days. Heartland Lutheran High School had a 10 a.m. start on 1/29 and canceled school on 2/5.

Important to buy American products
About 25 years ago, I wrote a letter to the editor and stated that we should buy American goods. It would have cost a little more, but it would help our economy and keep us out of this recession. We bought Japan's and now we buy China's and India's goods. If we had bought more American goods, people would be working, paying taxes and also paying into Social Security. We would have less debt, now it is $9 trillion.
We need to stop abortion now. In 35 years, we have killed 49 million babies. That amount, any amount could have been paying into Social Security and other taxes.
On immigration, we need to get together to control it. South Sioux City did just that and are very happy. We need to get together all the schools, police departments, sheriff's departments, city councils and county boards, also all churches and leading citizens. They can all learn English, work, pay taxes and all the rest of it or leave.
The stimulant package wouldn't work if 80 percent is spent for goods from China or India, not goods made in the United States.
Get together, we can do it.
