BASEBALL

Huskers-Stanford suspended by weather

STANFORD, Calif. Rain was the only winner on Saturday, as Nebraska's baseball game against Stanford was suspended in the middle of the third inning. The two teams were deadlocked in a scoreless contest, as heavy rains suspended play at 3:40 p.m. (central).

The two teams will resume Saturday's contest Sunday at 3 p.m. (Central) with a second game to follow approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the suspended game. Both games will be on Huskers.com and on selected Husker Sports Network stations following the women's basketball game.

Husker starter Dan Jennings was sharp early on, allowing one hits and striking out a batter in his two innings of work. Stanford starter Max Fearnow matched Jennings, striking out four and not allowing a base hit through the first three innings.

SOFTBALL

Home run powers Ole Miss past Nebraska

LOUISVILLE, Ky. Frigid temperatures in the mid-30s and a strong Ole Miss pitching staff were enough to cool off Nebraska's bats, as the Husker softball team fell 2-0 to the Rebels on Saturday at Louisville's Ulmer Stadium.

NU's offense, which was averaging four runs per contest over its last three games, was handcuffed all night by the performance of Ole Miss starter Tara Willitt. A left-hander facing a predominantly left-handed lineup, Willit (3-3) surrendered just three hit s and one walk while striking out seven in earning her first shutout of the season.

Ole Miss used a Lauren Grill two-run homer in the top of the third to score the only runs of the nights.

Earlier in the day, a five-run second inning proved too much for Nebraska to overcome, as Louisville scored all five of its run during the decisive inning and held on for a 5-3 victory.

In the five-run frame, Louisville (5-5) pounded out four hits and benefited from two Nebraska errors that led to a pair of unearned runs. Kassie Stanfill (2-1) earned the victory, allowing three runs (two earned) in a complete-game effort.

For Nebraska, freshman right-hander Tori Tyson (1-3) lasted just 1.1 innings and was tagged with the loss. Tyson surrendered four runs (three earned) on five hits.
