Eight area teams will be playing in district finals Monday and Tuesday with a trip to the state tournament on the line.
Some of those teams have wild cards locked up. Others must win to get to state.
There are some other teams like Grand Island Central Catholic and Heartland High who lost subdistrict games but still have a chance at a wild card.
Adams Central has yet to play a district game. The Patriots begin tonight against Lexington at the Health and Sports Center in Kearney. A win there would put them in the championship game on Tuesday night.
But seven district finals involving area teams are set. Here's a look at those seven games.
* class a, District 7
WHO: Grand Island (17-4) vs. Kearney (17-6)
TIPOFF: 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hastings High
THE DISH: Wild card? Maybe. With the new system of seeding the other six districts late in the season, the loser of this game has a better chance of getting a wild card.
But neither team wants to get to state that way. The Islanders and Bearcats, who both had tough semifinal games on Saturday, have played twice. Kearney won 60-47 in Kearney and the Islanders won 57-47 at the Heartland Events Center.
It will be tough for the Islanders to play without Pete Kropp. The senior guard broke his foot in the regular season finale against Columbus, but the Islanders found a way to win without him Saturday when Sam Carstens hit a 3-pointer with 7 seconds left to give them a 42-41 victory over North Platte.
Don't be surprised if this one goes to the wire too.
* class C-1, District 4
WHO: Boone Central (18-3) vs. Hastings SC (19-2)
TIPOFF: 7 p.m. Monday at Aurora
THE DISH: With the possible exception of the battle of unbeatens Bennington and Wisner-Pilger in the C1-3 final this might be the best district matchup in the class.
The No. 7 Bluehawks have been tough to beat all season long. Their only two losses have come to Class C-1 No. 1 Pierce and D-1 No. 1 Archbishop Bergan. They play tough Mike Trader-style defense and will be tough to beat.
But so will Boone Central. The No. 8 Cardinals have lost twice to Pierce and once to 17-3 O'Neill.
This will also be a match up between two talented teams. It should be well worth the price of admission.
* class C-2, District 5
WHO: Ravenna (22-1) vs. Axtell (18-4)
TIPOFF: 7 p.m. Monday at Kearney Catholic
THE DISH: Ravenna survived one of the toughest C-2 subdistricts around to advance to the district final.
The Bluejays, paced by 6-foot-6 senior Greg Nissen, have won 10 straight games since blowing a 10-point fourth-quarter lead in a 61-56 loss to Minden on Jan. 8. They like to shoot the 3-pointers and won't hesitate to let them fly.
We will see Ravenna at the state tournament regardless of the outcome. The Bluejays lead Class C-2 in wild card points. Axtell, on the other hand, is going to have to win to make their ninth state tournament appearance in school history.
* class D-1, District 2
WHO: Exeter-Milligan (11-9) vs. Kenesaw (13-7)
TIPOFF: 7 p.m. Tuesday at Doniphan-Trumbull
THE DISH: It's no surprise to see Kenesaw in the district final. The Blue Devil's didn't have a particularly strong subdistrict, and they came through by beating Shelton (86-48) and Red Cloud (51-40).
Exeter-Milligan had to knock off Clay Center to get to the district final and did just that with a 54-53 victory.
Kenesaw will be gunning for its first state tournament appearance since 1992. Exeter-Milligan hasn't been to state since the two schools consolidated. Exeter last went in 2000 and Milligan in 2002.
Class D-1, District 3
WHO: Palmer (20-2) vs. Humphrey SF (20-2)
TIPOFF: 7 p.m. Tuesday at Columbus
THE DISH: Humphrey St. Francis is third in wild card points with Palmer fourth, so the loser here certainly has a good shot at making a state tournament appearance.
St. Francis, rated No. 2 by the Omaha World-Herald, and No. 6 Palmer are two teams that like to get up and down the court. The Flyers average 59 points a game and the Tiger 63, so don't expect a game in the 40s for this one.
If Palmer can get point guard Nic Dukat penetrating and dishing to Neil Kilchriste, the Tigers are tough to beat.
Class D-2, District 1
WHO: Hampton (19-2) vs. Falls City SH (22-2)
TIPOFF: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Norris
THE DISH: Hampton coach Jerry Eickhoff needs just one win to tie the late Ed Colleran of Spalding Academy for the most wins in state history. He now stands at 647-222 for his career and is the winningest active coach.
It's hard to believe that the Hawks haven't been to state since 1994, but that should change. Here's another game where both teams are likely headed for the state tournament, one with a wild card berth and the other a district championship.
Falls City SH, rated No. 5 by the World-Herald, is third in wild card points with the eighth-rated Hawks sitting in fourth.
Class D-2, District 2
WHO: St. Edward (19-3) vs. Leigh (15-6)
TIPOFF: 7 p.m. Tuesday at Columbus Lakeview
THE DISH: The defending Class D-2 state champion Beavers are looking for their second straight state tournament trip and their second since 1985.
Last year, St. Edward had to use a wild card to get to state after being knocked off by Ewing in the district final. This year, the Beavers will have to win their district to make it to Lincoln.
With senior Shavontae Samuels leading the way, St. Edward can certainly be a dangerous team again this year.
