Seven fillies and mares will do battle in what looks to be a wide-open affair in the six furlong $25,000 Orphan Kist Stakes for Nebraska breds Saturday at Fonner Park.

The defending champion Lovesablumin, owned and trained by Terrell Hemmer, is the morning-line favorite coming off a strong performance in the Bold Accent Stakes on opening weekend.

"She really tried hard in the Bold Accent, if we'd have had a little more luck we could have won," Hemmer said.

Lovesablumin finished in the middle of a three horse photo in that race, behind the winning Here's A Memory and the third-place finisher Real Battleaxe.

"There's really some nice mares in here," Hemmer said.

"Real Battleaxe was right with us last time, Plaer's Trump was outstanding as a three-year-old, and Scat's Princess always runs tough."

Real Battleaxe will run as an entry with stablemate I Talk for the Marvin Johnson barn.

The third choice on the morning line may be the most intriguing as Plaer's Trump, last year's three-year-old Nebraska-bred filly champion, will make her debut against older horses for trainer Herb Riecken.

"It's like graduating from high school and entering college," Rieken said.

"She was very successful the last two years, but now she has to prove it against older horses."

Plaer's Trump won four races out of five tries last year competing against three-year-old fillies on the Nebraska circuit.

"She (Plaer's Trump) is training very well," Rieken said. "This race however really came up very tough, any of these seven horses could win here."

Rounding out the field in the Orphan Kist is the Ronald Westermann-trained C.R. Charmer; Carol's Tinkerbell, trained by David Grimes; and Scat's Princess from the David Anderson barn.

Post-time for the Orphan Kist is 4:58 p.m.

Simo-taneous

The Orphan Kist is named after the winningest Nebraska-bred filly of all time. Orphan Kist won 28 races in a career that saw her bankroll $631,997.

Curlin, the 2007 horse of the year, made a successful 2008 debut by winning the $175,000 Jaguar Trophy Thursday at Nad al Sheba Racecourse in Dubai.

The Steve Asmussen-trained Curlin is prepping in Dubai for the $6 million Dubai World Cup to be run March 29 at Nad al Sheba.

The $1 million dollar Santa Anita Handicap is slated for Saturday with a fourteen horse field. Awesome Gem is the morning-line favorite at four-to-one.
