City of Kearney proclaims 'Wear All Purple Day'

KEARNEY The Tri-City Storm and FirsTier Event Center announced Friday that Saturday will be proclaimed "Wear All Purple Day" by the City of Kearney and Mayor Stan Clouse.

March 1st is the date for the special "Pack It In Purple" promotion for the Storm's game against the Omaha Lancers. As part of "Pack It In Purple," Storm players will be wearing specially designed jerseys. Immediately following the contest, the game-worn jerseys will be auctioned off with all proceeds being donated to the Kearney Area United Way. Over seven seasons, Storm Hockey has helped raise nearly $100,000 for the United Way.

The official City of Kearney proclamation will be revealed at the Storm game on Saturday during a special presentation. Written in the proclamation, which is signed by Mayor Clouse and marked with the official seal, Clouse proclaims "March 1, 2008 as "Wear All Purple Day" and urges citizens to participate in "Pack It In Purple" and to help raise funds for the Kearney Area United Way."

Saturday marks the second consecutive year for the "Pack It In Purple" event which encourages fans to wear purple clothing in support of the Storm.

"It's great to see the City of Kearney and really the entire community rally around the team and support a great cause all at the same time," stated Interim Vice President of Operations, Kyle Means. "Storm Hockey is extremely proud to be associated with the United Way for this event and thrilled about Mayor Clouse's proclamation of Wear All Purple Day."

Saturday night's festivities, which are sponsored in part by the Nebraska Lottery and the Kearney Hub, also include a contest for the "Most Purple Person" designed to find the most decorated and enthusiastic fans. Tickets are still available for the game by logging on to www.stormhockey.com or by calling the box office at 308-338-8011.


SOFTBALL

Hastings College adds game for Saturday

Hastings College has added a doubleheader for Saturday against Bethany College at the Smith Softball Complex in Hastings. The doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. The Broncos are still playing Kansas Wesleyan on Sunday in a doubleheader also starting at 1 p.m. at the Smith Softball Complex.

Husker Youth Experience fills up on first day

The Nebraska football program'sannual Husker Youth Experience received registrations fromwell over 600 intended participants in the first few hours of online enrollment on Friday.The event is considered full, but extra registrants who enrolled before theonline registration was stopped will be put on an official waiting list andnotified if spots become available.

Event registration began at 9 a.m. Friday through Huskers.com. The only way to enroll was online.

The Husker Youth Experience isdesigned to providechildren ages 8 through 8th grade inNebraska and surrounding areas (within 100 miles of Lincoln) an opportunity to be coached by the University of Nebraska coaching staff and Nebraska players.

The free event will be March 29 at Memorial Stadium.


MEN'S COLLEGE GOLF

Pillen and Wyatt lead Huskers at USF Invitational

DADE CITY, Fla. Junior Mark PIllen played a solid first round and freshman Andrew Wyatt picked up where he left off at the Rice Intercollegiate last week, but it wasn't enough to help the Nebraska men's golf team climb the team standings on Friday at the Ron Smith/USF Invitational.

Pillen used an eagle on the par-five 9th hole to finish with a one-over-par 73, good for a tie for 18th place.

Wyatt shot a two-over-par 74, which puts him in a tie for 23rd place after the first round of play. Despite Pillen and Wyatt's solid performances and a team score of 305, the Huskers' best round of the spring Nebraska finished the first day in 18th place out of 18 teams.


COLLEGE WOMEN'S TENNIS

Nebraska blanks Air Force to move to 10-0

LINCOLN The Nebraska women's tennis team moved to 10-0 on Friday after it defeated the Air Force Falcons 7-0 at the Nebraska Tennis Center. Air Force lost its fourth straight match and dropped to 3-10 overall.

The Huskers have been dominant in a record-setting fashion early this season. The 10-0 start is the best start in team history, while 9 of the 10 wins have been 7-0 sweeps, and the other a 6-1victory.

The Huskers started the match with a bit of history, as senior Imke Reimers moved to second place on the all-time NU doubles wins list, earning her 69th career victory and her ninth this spring with an 8-0 victory with partner Jana Albers at No. 1 doubles. Maria Ring and Wiveca Swarting won their 10th doubles match of the spring as a pair with an 8-3 victory at No. 2, while freshmen Amber Chandronnait and Stephanie Evans rebounded from their first doubles loss of the season last week with an 8-5 win at No. 3.

The Huskers play their last non-conference opponent of the season on Sunday as they take on Northern Iowa. NU hopes to improve on its record start to the season and record its 10th straight home shutout. The Huskers have their first home conference match next Saturday against No. 4 Baylor.


SPORTS CAMP

FCA Power Camp to be March 29 at GINW

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes will present Power Camp on March 29 at Grand Island Northwest.

The camp will run from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and offering sport-specific training for junior high/middle school students. The cost is $20, which includes T-shirt, Bible, lunch and snack. Participants are encouraged to wear athletic attire and not bring valuables. The deadline for registration is March 25.
