LINCOLN < The way Marissa Kastanek and Katie Birkel were making shots for Lincoln Southeast, it became obvious early it wouldn't be a matter of whether or not the Knights would win, but by how much.
The pair led another of Southeast's 3-point shooting barrages Saturday night in a 60-44 victory over Millard West in the Class A girls basketball final.
After making 13 three-pointers in a semifinal win over Millard North, Southeast connected on 10 shots from long range against the Wildcats.
Kastanek, who sat out much of the regular season because of an eligibility issue, hit three 3-pointers while leading the Knights (26-1) with 23 points. Birkel made five 3s on her way to 20 points.
"We've been ready for this all year, and we weren't going to let anyone take it away from us," Birkel said. "Once Marissa got us rolling, we just took off from there."
Southeast's only loss this season was to Class B champion South Sioux City. The Knights, making their 13th appearance in the finals, now own a Class A-record nine state championships.
Kastanek started the show by scoring 11 first-quarter points and leading Southeast to a 19-7 advantage. The lead grew steadily, with Birkel scoring 11 in the third quarter as the margin grew to 55-29.
The Knights' 10 3-pointers came on 30 attempts. They committed just seven turnovers, while Millard West gave away the ball 25 times.
"We hoped they'd be cold, but they werent," Millard West coach Kip Colony said. "They're kind of the Cadillac of Class A."
Heather Pohl paced Millard West (24-2) with 15 points.
