Lovesablumin, owned and trained by Terrell Hemmer of Grand Island, successfully defended her championship in winning the $25,000-added Orphan Kist Stakes for Nebraska-bred fillies and mares Saturday at Fonner Park.

The five-year-old mare took the lead from Real Battleaxe entering the far turn and held off a strong challenge from Plaer's Trump in the stretch to post a one-length win in the six furlong affair.

"She was just too busy being fabulous," Hemmer said. "She really ran a great race. We'll see how she comes back before deciding what to do next with her."

Hemmer was full of praise for the runner-up, Plaer's Trump, trained by Herb Rieken.

"Herb's filly (Plaer's Trump) really is nice," Hemmer said. "She made a big run at us, but the nice thing about our mare is you can gain on her, but she's tough to pass."

Jockey Larren Delorme picked up the ride on Lovesablumin as regular rider Jerry Carkeek was hospitalized Saturday due to dehydration.

"I felt really bad for Jerry," Hemmer said, "He helps us so much with this mare, but Larren rode her well today for never riding her before."

Delorme had plenty of praise for Lovesablumin as well.

"She really impressed me," Delorme said. "I had never been on her back until the race. Terry told me to get her up where other horses would have to earn their positions, and she just took off at the quarter pole."

Delorme said the stretch run was a little different story.

"She got to looking around at the grandstand when she heard the noise," Delorme said. "I knew she had a lot left. I just encouraged her a little and she took off again."

Lovesablumin garnered a $15,390 check for Hemmer, while covering the six furlongs in 1:13.20.

Lovesablumin, sired by Blumin Affair by Hemmer's dam Strawberry Love, may soon have another Strawberry Love Hemmer charge on the track.

"We have a four-year-old named Here Comes Harley out of Strawberry Love that may be debuting later in the meet," Hemmer said.

The favorite in the race Lovesablumin returned $4.80 to win. The Lovesablumin-Plaer's Choice exacta returned $15.60.
