Former Hall County Supervisor Gary Quandt wants his old job back.

The 52-year-old Quandt filed for the District 6 county board seat Monday the last day to file for elected office before the May 13 primary.

District 6 is currently represented by Supervisor Bob Humiston. Quandt, 3356 N. Gunbarrel Road, doesn't currently live in District 6, but said he intends to move into the district late this spring or by mid-summer.

Both Quandt and Humiston are Republicans, so the two will square off in the primary. The winner of the primary faces no Democratic or third-party challenger for the November general election.

"I just decided here lately to run," Quandt said. "I wasn't happy with some of the things I've been seeing on the board like the strong committee form of government. I think it should be abolished.

"We need more open, honest government," Quandt said.

Quandt began his service in public office on the Hall County Airport Authority in 1982. He served three terms on the Hall County board from 1986 to 1994.

The county board has one other contested primary race. It is the District 2 Republican race between incumbent Supervisor Jim Eriksen and challenger Dan Purdy.

Also filing on Monday was a challenger for the Ward 5 Grand Island City Council seat.

David Ziola, 43, of 1925 W. 11th Ave., will face former Grand Island Finance Director Chuck Haase in the general election.

The Ward 5 incumbent, Councilwoman Joyce Haase, declined to seek another term in hopes that her husband, Chuck, would get elected to the council seat.

Raymond Fye, 52, of 2624 W. Division, filed last Friday for the Ward 1 city council seat. Fye had twice applied to be appointed to Ward 1 when former council members Carole Cornelius and then Scott Walker resigned from Ward 1.

Fye is a technical service representative for a pest control company, attended Central Nebraska Community College and lived in Hastings for 20 years before moving to Grand Island in 1993.

"I've always had an interest in what's going on in the community and what I can do to make it better," he said.

Fye said the timing is right for him now because his son, whom he raised as a single parent, is now a sophomore in college. Fye was active in many youth organizations during his son's growing up years.

Fye will face Councilman Bob Niemann, who was appointed to the Ward 1 position earlier this year and has filed for re-election, in the November general election.

The city council races are nonpartisan and lack enough candidates to warrant a primary election contest.

Ziola was not immediately available for comment on why he chose to run for city council.
