Hall County supervisors are to talk Tuesday about updating guidelines for providing general assistance to indigent residents of the county.

Specifically, the board is being asked to update its indigent burial policies.

The last formal approval of such a policy was in 1986, although state law requires general assistance guidelines be updated every two years.

The board last looked at an update in November 2007 when it began a study on whether to implement a cremation-only policy for indigent burials. That's a change that could save county taxpayers some funeral costs even though the county is still paying 22-year-old prices for funerals.

Typically, the county spends about $50,000 a year to bury residents who cannot afford a funeral. Those individuals are typically homeless, transients and paupers.

The county has been paying about $1,100 to $1,500 per burial, even though costs have risen since the last contract was approved.

The latest update is being requested by the Health and Human Services workers.

The county board meeting starts at 9 a.m. in the Hall County Administration Building, 121 S. Pine St. It is open to the public.
