HUSKER BASEBALL

Tezak to undergo surgery, miss remainder of season

LINCOLN University of Nebraska Baseball Coach Mike Anderson announced Monday afternoon that senior Jeff Tezak will undergo season-ending knee surgery later this week.

Tezak originally suffered the injury earlier in the year, but was able to safely practice and play with a functional knee brace before electing to undergo surgery on his left knee. This season, he started NU's first seven games at designated hitter, hitting a homer against UC Riverside on Friday and driving in two runs on the season in helping the Huskers to a 5-2 record. He will apply for a medical hardship in order to be eligible for the 2009 season.

"He showed a lot of courage trying to play through it and he was unselfish in tying to help his team, but it is in his best long-term interest to have the surgery now," Anderson said. "We're disappointed that he will be out for the rest of the season, but also thankful that he should be recovered in time for the start of next season."

Tezak earned second-team All-Big 12 honors at designated hitter last season, hitting .335 with three homers and 37 RBIs in 56 contests.

The Huskers will continue their homestand Tuesday afternoon, as they take on the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers. First pitch from Hawks Field is set for 1:35 p.m., and the game will be carried on selected Husker Sports Network stations, including KLIN 1400 AM in Lincoln, and on the Internet at Huskers.com.
