Two Grand Island men have filed to run for the 3rd District congressional seat held by Rep. Adrian Smith.

Jeremiah Ellison of 811 W. 11th St. filed on the Republican ticket. He will square off against Smith in the May 13 primary election. Calls to Ellison's published Grand Island phone number were not returned Tuesday.

Meanwhile, two Democrats have also filed for the 3rd District seat including Grand Island businessman Jay Stoddard. The other Democratic candidate is Paul A. Spatz of Osmond.

"We've lost 6,500-plus family farms" in Nebraska, Stoddard said.

He wants to help the country "manage things better" to prevent the decline of the family farm and to get the country's finances in better shape.

Stoddard is 77 "the same age as Warren Buffett," he noted.

He has run for political office in the past. Most recently was a 2004 run for secretary of state due to his concerns regarding election fraud.

Stoddard said he has come to realize that a seat in Congress is needed to really make a difference through positive legislation.

"That's the only place where we can stimulate good things to happen in our society," he said.

Spatz (pronounced Spots) is a semi-retired farmer and a former railroad line maintenance worker for Burlington Northern Santa Fe.

He has a bachelor's degree in education from UNL and currently runs a 473-acre grain commodity farm.

Spatz is divorced, has five children, and is the interim Democratic Party chairman in Pierce County. The February caucuses motivated him to run for office.

Spatz said he wants to "call for a declaration of war with Afghanistan and Iraq or immediately withdraw."

Smith was first elected to the 3rd District seat in 2006.
