SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Second seed Northwestern won its 30th game of the season and claimed the 2008 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Women's Basketball Postseason Championship with an 83-79 win at top-seed Morningside on Tuesday night. The win gives third ranked Northwestern (30-2) the second automatic berth to the NAIA Division National Tournament from the GPAC. Second ranked Morningside (30-3) secured the regular season championship and the leagues first berth. Fourth ranked Hastings (27-5) and 10th ranked Concordia (24-6) both received at-large berths from the NAIA.
The 23 automatic qualifiers include: Aquinas (Mich.), Benedictine (Kan.), Berea (Ky.), Bethel (Ind.), Black Hills (S.D.), Cardinal Stritch (Wis.), Daemen (N.Y.), Eastern Oregon, Holy Names (Calif.), King (Tenn.), Maine at Fort Kent, MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.), Morningside (Iowa), Northwestern (Iowa), Northwood (Fla.), Ohio Dominican, Ozarks (Mo.), Shawnee State (Ohio), Southern Oregon, Southwestern (Kan.), Saint Ambrose (Iowa), Sterling (Kan.) and Union (Ky.).
Concordia (Neb.), Cornerstone (Mich.), Dakota State (S.D.), Davenport (Mich.), Hastings (Neb.), Indiana Wesleyan, Minot (N.D.), Rio Grande (Ohio) and William Jewell (Mo.) received an at-large bid into the tournament.
The official tournament bracket will be released by 5 p.m. Wednesday.
