A pair of former area athletes appear to be in the running to win national titles this week as Grand Island Northwest graduate Katie Moeller and Hastings St. Cecilia graduate both take top-five rankings into the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
The meet begins Thursday in Johnson City, Tenn.
Moeller is the highest-ranked Bronco athlete. The freshman enters the 1:30 p.m. Saturday women's high jump competition as the No. 2 seed with a season-best performance of 1.70 meters.
Moeller is also listed as a member of Hastings' 4x40o-meter relay team that is ranked 13th (4:01.98). She's joined on the relay by Samatha Kasten, Jamie Volz and Danielle Olivas.
On the men's side, VanCura is No. 3 in the country in weight throw (18.16 meters) and fifth in the shot put (16.95 meters). The men's weight throw is 1 p.m. Friday and the shot put is 1 p.m. Saturday.
Other HC women to qualify in individual events include: Audrey Curtis (600), Audra Leichleiter (pole vault), Olivas (800), Scottie Shaw (1,000 and 5,000) and Jamie Williams (shot put and weight throw).
Other Bronco men to qualify include: Tyson Buresh (60 hurdles), Scott Fritz (weight throw), Will Keesee (high jump), Josh Pinkelman (shot put, weight throw) and Turner Scholl (weight throw).
