Benchwarmers beware: Terry Bowden is coming to town, with a goal of helping motivate the "backups" of the business world.
As part of its annual meeting April 3 at the Heartland Events Center, the Grand Island Area Chamber of Commerce will feature Bowden as its keynote speaker.
Bowden is known as a leading college football television analyst, radio personality and the 1993 National Coach of the Year. Following a 5:30 p.m. social hour, dinner and program, he will speak about "motivating the benchwarmers."
When choosing its keynote speaker, the chamber looks to alternate between motivational and more serious topics from year to year, said Micki Ward, chamber events/communications director. Bowden was chosen for his originality and focus on teamwork.
"Hopefully, it'll be really energizing," Ward said.
Also, a live auction will replace the chamber's usual raffle fundraiser.
Items that will be auctioned off include a trip for four to Wendover, Nev.; a diamond pendant; an HP notebook computer; an Eakes Office Plus workstation; a football autographed by Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne; and a landscaping package, among others.
The auction will be conducted by Tom Wieck, and it should add a little excitement to the event, Ward said.
The chamber's annual meeting is expected to attract 600 chamber and community partners as well as local and state dignitaries. As part of the evening program, the organization will give out its annual Partners in Progress, Distinguished Service and Small Business of the Year awards.
The event is not invitation-only, Ward said. Tickets can be purchased at the chamber, 309 W. Second St., until March 24. The cost for the social hour, catered dinner, program, speaker, dessert reception and auction is $40 per seat or $280 for a reserved table of eight.
For more information, call the chamber at 382-9210.
