HASTINGS < Good Samaritan Village in Hastings has gone tobacco free in response to new guidelines.
A task force of employees, both smokers and non-smokers, developed the new guidelines and set March 1 as the date for them to become effective.
Areas of the village considered tobacco free include Perkins Pavilion, the Villa, the Village Green, the patios, the senior center, all other village buildings, all green spaces, parking lots, sidewalks and lanes/circles.
Smoking is no longer allowed in personal vehicles parked on village property.
Residents are allowed to smoke in the independent living areas and outside their front stoops only.
"While smoking has not been permitted in any of these buildings for quite a while," said Kim Johansen, executive director, "this new policy formalizes the fact that smoking and using tobacco products is not allowed anywhere on our campus."
This change was previously announced last July to give staff and residents time to plan their own course of action.
"While not forcing people to quit, we have made information available on smoking cessation classes and products," Johansen said.
In addition, the Good Samaritan health insurance program helps enrolled employees pay for smoking cessation medication.
The new guidelines apply to all residents, visitors, staff, vendors, private contractors and those who come onto the campus to provide services.
