St. Cecilia grad has chance to add more today
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. Hastings College's Scott VanCura captured the weight throw title Friday in the NAIA national track and field championships.
Scott VanCura won the event with a mark of 60 feet, 8 3/4 inches. The senior from Hastings St. Cecilia entered the event ranked third in the country.
VanCura has a chance to make it two titles Saturday as he's scheduled to compete in the shot put. He's ranked fifth nationally in the event.
Powered by VanCura's national title, Hastings finished the day fifth in the men's team standings with 11.75 points through six events.
Hastings also got points from Will Keesee, who tied for fourth place in the high jump. The Bronco freshman cleared 6-6 3/4.
Hastings' Scott Fritz placed seventh in the weight throw (50-2 1/2). Also in the weight throw, Bronco Turner Scholl was third in his flight (56-10 3/4) and HC's Josh Pinkelman was fifth in his flight (50-3 1/4), but neither qualified for the finals.
Tyson Buresh was third in heat two of the 60-meter hurdles (8.51), but failed to qualify for the finals.
For the Hastings women, Scottie Shaw placed fourth in the first heat of the 1,000 (3:00.45) and qualified for the finals of the event. She also qualified for the finals in the 5,000, placing sixth in the second heat in 18:17.72.
Audrey Curtis finished fifth in her heat in the preliminaries of the 600 (1:38.69) and didn't advance to the finals.
Danielle Olivas ended eighth in the first heat of the 800 (2:24.62), failing to advance to the finals.
Audra Leichleiter finished 17th in the pole vault, clearing 10-11 3/4.
Jamie Willilams was sixth in flight three of the weight throw (47-9 3/4) and failed to qualify for the finals.
Grand Island Northwest graduate Katie Moeller is scheduled to compete for Hastings Saturday in the final day of the national meet. The Bronco freshman is seeded second in the event with a season-best performance of 1.70 meters.
