HASTINGS < The 2008 Hastings Chamber of Commerce Whoopers and Hoopers basketball tournament will be played next Friday through Sunday in Hastings.
A total of 116 teams from throughout the Midwest and beyond are scheduled to compete, bringing approximately 1,500 men's and women's basketball players and fans to the area.
There are five men's divisions and two women's divisions. The men's and women's Elite divisions are mostly made up of former Division I, Division II, Division III and NAIA players.
The men's Elite division pays out $4,000 total to the top three teams. There are 14 teams in this division and last year's champions are back to defend their title.
The women's Elite division has four teams competing for $1500. Former Nebraska Cornhuskers Nicole and Jami Kubik are on rosters. NAIA Division II 2003 national player of the year Liz Herbek of Hastings College will also be playing.
A total of 14 Gymnasiums will be used for the tournament. The men's Elite games will be played at the Hastings College Osborne Sports Complex, St. Cecilia's Chapman gymnasium and at Central Community College. The women's Elite division will play games at Adams Central gymnasium, Hastings College Osborne Sports Complex and at the 18th Street YMCA gymnasium. The finals on Sunday will be at the Hastings College Osborne Sports Complex.
Weekend festivities include the five-on-five men's and women's basketball tournaments, slam dunk and 3-point competitions at Hastings College Osborne Sports Complex on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free to the public.
There will be a player's party from 8-11 p.m. Saturday night for those 21 and older (with valid ID) at the Hastings Auditorium. Admission is $12 to the public.
Tournament buttons may be purchased for $8 and are good for admission to all the games at all of the gymnasiums throughout the weekend. The schedule will be posted on the Internet at www.hastingschamber.com on Tuesday and will be updated as the games are played.
