Free passport photos will be available at AAA Nebraska's Grand Island office on March 14.

The photos, along with guidance on new international travel requirements, will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at AAA's local office, 3359 W. Capital Ave.

A set of passport photos can cost $7 to $15 at many facilities, so a family of four can save $28 to $60 by attending the free event in Grand Island.

On Jan. 31, the federal government began requiring proof of citizenship when arriving at all entry borders and seaports. Travelers will need a birth or naturalization certificate and a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, to prove their citizenship. A U.S. passport may also be used to verify citizenship.

Also, effective Feb. 18, all cruise passengers must be on board the ship at least one hour prior to departure. AAA advises cruise passengers to arrive in their port city the day or night before the ship is scheduled to leave and to check with their cruise company, as some are requiring guests to be on board 90 minutes prior to departure.

A new tool for travelers was also made available Feb. 1, when the federal government began accepting applications for the new passport card. This card, which can be used instead of the traditional passport book, is designed to expedite processing at U.S. land and sea ports-of-entry from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean. The card will be valid for the same amount of time as a normal passport book, 10 years for an adult and five years for children 15 and younger, but the card will be more portable and more convenient for those living in border communities.

For adults who already have a passport book, they may apply for the card as a renewal and pay $20. First-time applicants will pay $45 for adult cards and $35 for children. This card cannot be used to travel by air.

Once filed, travelers should allow a minimum of six weeks for the processing of their U. S. passport application.
