A van full of college students headed for spring break in sunny California narrowly escaped serious injury in Nebraska Saturday morning.
The van rolled three times near the Alda interchange on Interstate 80 at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, according to Hall County sheriff's deputies.
Eighteen-year-old Angela Bosetti of Smithton, Pa., was driving a 1998 Toyota Sienna westbound on the interstate. The van began to fishtail and went onto the median.
Bosetti overcorrected and the van rolled, Deputy Heath Johnson said.
He said the fishtailing apparently began as Bosetti was passing another westbound vehicle. The air displacement caused by passing combined with the shifting of weight from six other people in the van could have set off the fishtailing, Johnson said.
Bosetti and her six passengers were all taken by ambulance to St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
All seven had been wearing seat belts and suffered only minor injuries, Johnson said. They all were treated and released about three hours later.
The passengers were: Michael Buyn, 18, Guam; Lindsay Marks, 18, of Caledona, Mich.; Rachel Victor, 19, of St. Louis; Seok Joeng, 20, of Fremont, Calif.; Cory Dauphin, 19, of Baldwinville, N.Y.; and Benjamin Dixon, 18, of Springfield, Ohio.
All were either freshmen or sophomores at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., Johnson said.
The seven were headed to Joeng's home in California for spring break, the deputy said. Joeng turned 20 on Sunday.
The van, which was owned by Marks' parents, was a total loss. Johnson said.
