ORD Girl Scouts currently working on their Silver and Gold awards are invited to participate in several activities at "A Weekend With Evelyn Sharp" on March 28 and 29 in Ord.

The focus of the event will be careers in aviation, including highlighting Ord businesses owned by women. The Scouts will tour several businesses, including the Cool Beans Candle Shop, where each will make and take home a candle. Calamity Jane's will be the venue for the Friday evening dinner, where Diane Bartels will share the life story of Evelyn Sharp. Plans are also being made to view the NETV film "Sharpie: Born to Fly" at the Ord Theater.

The Friday overnight will be at the Ord United Methodist Church, where Evelyn was a member and where her funeral service was held during World War II.

Sites on the Saturday morning tour will include Ord High School, places of residences and businesses the Sharps owned, the North Loup River Bridge from which she taught swimming, the Ord City Cemetery and Evelyn Sharp Field.

Saturday afternoon will feature an air show performed by Chandy Clanton of Lincoln, a member of the U.S. Aerobatic Team who has competed internationally. Clanton's performance will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday. Static displays will include the Nebraska State Patrol helicopter, Army National Guard and a Piper Colt airplane that has been modified to allow its paraplegic pilot to fly. Rosie the Riveter (Cherri Fischer) from Scottsbluff will make a guest appearance, sharing the roles women play in aviation and aerospace.

Those interested in attending should contact Sherri Marchman at (800) 879-6123 or (308) 236-5478. Deadline for registration is March 17.
