Although engaging in a speed dual for five furlongs, Blake Rattlenroll, under the care of veteran rider Don Herber, drew off to win the $9,500 feature race Sunday at Fonner Park.

Blake Rattlenroll carved out fast fractions through the first five furlongs with I'm Real right beside him.

Entering the far turn I'm Real the favorite in the race pulled ahead of Bill Isburg's six-year-old, but Herber found more as Blake Rattlenroll rallied to post a 1 1/2 length win over fast closing The Ruzz. The winner tripped the timer in a swift 1:13:00 for the six furlongs.

Even though Blake Rattlenroll had given up the lead on the turn, Herber still had a lot of confidence in his mount.

"I let him run his race," Herber said. "We got eyeballed, but he dug in and found another gear."

Blake Rattlenroll paid $8.40 to win. The exacta with The Ruzz second returned $80.40.

Isburg's star added $5,600 to his bankroll, as the six-year-old is now 2-for-2 at Fonner while earning $11,300.

Longshots ruled the day at Fonner as only two favorites, Justdigit in the first and Dance N Denae in the sixth, were winners.

The toteboard was lit up with big winners on the day, as the husband/wife team of Kelli Martinez and Armando Martinez teamed up in the third race with Sunday Dancer, who returned $27 to win. The seventh race saw the horse with the longest odds in the race, Hot Chocolate, prevail under a strong ride by Lee Sensenbach. Hot Chocolate returned $24.60 to his backers.

The longest payoff in the day was in the eighth race as Larren Delorme went wire-to-wire with Gilbert Ecoffey's Cruisin For Action. The five-year-old mare returned $35 to win.

An even bigger longshot crossed the finish line in the fifth race as Als Grandfille from the David Anderson barn finished first at 25-to-1. However the Anderson charge was disqualified and placed third for interference out of the gate.
