The Northwest school board on Monday night approved a technology plan to buy technology hardware and also a four-year lease plan for PC and Apple laptops.
The technology plan will spend about $76,000 across all five school buildings in the district, while the computer lease plan will cost about $50,000 per year. Some of the computers will be leased from Apple, while the PCs will be leased from Computer Concepts.
Teacher Chad May presented a report on the behalf of the technology committee. He noted that the cost of the technology plan plus the computer lease keeps technology spending for the district at or a little below $100 per student.
In other action, the board approved submission of an application for a preschool education grant that would serve preschoolers from ages 3 to 5.
Northwest's cost would be $61,000, including both cash and in-kind services. The state grant would be for $40,000, although there is another $20,000 in startup money the first year.
The grant is renewable for three years. At that time, the Northwest system would start receiving state aid for preschool students that it educates.
The board also approved an east entrance to the football field and track. The entrance is designed in a way that could eventually allow a fieldhouse to be built.
The board also approved a two-year school calendar. Start date for the 2008-09 school year will be Aug. 14.
Superintendent Bill Mowinkel briefly talked about LB1157, which would change the state's testing for all Nebraska's students. He also talked about LB988, the proposed state aid bill that has Northwest receiving nearly $1 million more than the state aid that was certified on Feb. 1.
Mowinkel noted that LB988 was approved by the Education Committee, but has not yet received first-round approval from the Nebraska Legislature.
