Street closures and other changes will start this week on the West Second Street/Highway 30 project in Grand Island, according to an announcement on Monday from Paulsen Construction and the Nebraska Department of Roads.
The complex project involves rerouting the highway's more than 18,000 daily vehicles for at least nine months.
Nearly a mile of the asphalt highway will be replaced with concrete and widened from four lanes to five. The project also will require substantial gas line, water line and storm sewer line work.
The construction cost for the project is $4.5 million
This week, crews will be installing signs and barricades on First, Second and Third streets from Grant Street to Cleburn Street in anticipation of next Monday, when it is planned to route westbound Highway 30 traffic onto Third Street.
By the end of this week, weather permitting, the following streets will be closed on the south side of Second Street: Grant Street, Tilden Street, Logan Street, Harrison Street, Madison Street, Jefferson Street, Washington Street, Lincoln Street and Clark Street. Greenwich Street will be closed on the north side of Second Street.
No-parking signs will be installed along the westbound Highway 30 detour route at Clark Street, Third Street and Grant Street.
Grant Street from Second Street to Third Street will be changed to one way southbound only, and Clark Street from Second Street to Third Street will be changed to one way northbound only.
Other work occurring this week:
* Lowering of gas lines at Broadwell and Tilden and signal work at Second Street and Broadwell as well as Third Street and Broadwell.
* Weather permitting, on March 17, westbound Highway 30 traffic will be detoured to Third Street from Clark Street to Grant Street. Third Street will remain two-way traffic.
* The Department of Roads and Werner Construction request that people traveling through the project drive safely by using caution, paying attention to signs and not tailgating.
* Speeding fines are doubled in construction zones.
