Grand Island's Community Redevelopment Authority will meet Wednesday and may contribute $45,000 toward a future business improvement district on Second Street.
The money would pay for underground conduit from Eddy Street to Garfield that could be used to add landscaping sprinklers or pedestrian lighting in the future.
A large portion of the suggested improvement district will be under construction Monday through the end of the year for the widening of Second Street by the Nebraska Department of Roads.
"It's cheaper to put it in before than after," CRA Director Chad Nabity said of installing conduit.
Both 2- and 3-inch pipe could be installed as the road project is under way. One section of 2-inch pipe would be for underground sprinklers, a second run of 2-inch pipe would be for sprinkler controls. The 3-inch pipe is for electrical service needed for pedestrian lights, he said.
The nearly 7,000 feet of 2-inch PVC costs $4 per foot, Nabity said. The 3-inch PVC costs $5 per foot and about 3,500 feet of that is needed. The total conduit cost is $45,292.
Nabity said that $45,000 will run conduit to the 15 blocks in the Second Street widening project. If the conduit were run after the widening is completed, the $45,000 would cover just two blocks, he said.
The CRA can provide assistance for improvements that are done in a blighted and substandard area. The Second Street area was declared blighted last year. The CRA then financed a redevelopment plan for the area and expressed support for an improvement district during its meeting last month.
The CRA will also hear a 20-minute presentation on Wednesday from Todd Brown of Cicada Dwellings in Hastings.
Brown uses software to create three-dimensional models.
The CRA meets at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Grand Island City Hall, 100 E. First St. The meeting is open to the public.
