Find a funny pipe? Let law enforcement handle it, sheriff says

HASTINGS If you ever find a suspicious pipe, it's best to leave it alone and call law enforcement carrying the object into a courthouse can cause a panic.

On Wednesday, a man brought a pipe with capped ends into the Adams County Sheriff's Department, located in the courthouse, to give to an investigator. The delivery caused enough concern to shut the courthouse down for about two hours, Adams County Sheriff Gregg Magee said.

The man had called and asked for a drug investigator, saying he'd found a pipe and wanted to turn it in. Authorities assumed the man was talking about a drug pipe, Magee said.

It wasn't until the man arrived at the courthouse that authorities realized he meant a different kind of pipe.

Because deputies had no idea if the capped pipe contained explosive material, an investigator set it on the lawn outside the courthouse, evacuated everyone inside and called the Nebraska State Patrol's bomb unit, Magee said.

A bomb robot was used to check for explosives, but none were found, the sheriff said.
