Broncos ease past King College, 76-41

SIOUX CITY, Iowa The Hastings College women's basketball team rolled into the record books Thursday with a 76-41 victory over King College (Tenn.) in first-round play of the NAIA Division II national tournament at the Tyson Events Center.

The Broncos (28-5) advanced to a 2:15 p.m. Friday second-round game against Benedictine (Kan.) a 79-57 winner over Aquinas (Mich.) by posting their record 23rd victory in the NAIA Division II tournament.

"I don't even like to think about that stuff," Hastings coach Tony Hobson said on his post-game radio show. "I want to win some more and just keep building on it, but it does kind of show what kind of program we've had here of late and the kind of kids we've had come through here."

Hastings, which has won national titles in 2002, 2003 and 2006, is now 23-6 all-time in the event.

"It's not that easy to come up here and win all the time," Hobson said. "The other teams are after the same thing you're after and you have to get your team prepared and then you hope that you can execute and play with a little bit of passion."

Against King College, it was easy. The Broncos used a 14-0 run on their way to a 34-20 halftime lead and then scored the first nine points of the second half to lead 43-20.

"We weren't smooth at all today," Hobson said. "We've played better, but I liked our effort and I thought we were enthusiastic and ready to play."

Hastings was especially stingy on defense. The Broncos limited the Tornado to 28 percent shooting (16-of-57) and forced 25 turnovers, four of them coming on steals by HC's Rachel Isherwood.

"Once we got up on them and started turning them a little bit, we got on that little run where we took it from them two or three times," Hobson said. "Isherwood, she was just a monster on defense.

"That's what caused our run was that we picked up the defensive end of it a little bit."

Breanna Lien scored a game-high 16 points and had seven rebounds and six blocked shots for the Broncos. The performance by the 6-foot-4 junior center was a boost for a Hastings team that has had to play its last five games without leading scorer and rebounder Lindsay Ducey, who has been out with a broken foot.

"It's especially important that Breanna score some points in there because she's our only inside threat," Hobson said.

Central City junior guard Kay Broekemeier added 15 points for the Broncos, who shot 60 percent in the first half and 57 percent from the field in the game. Ravenna sophomore Heather McKeon and Isherwood added 11 points apiece for Hastings.

Hobson said he liked his team's scoring balance.

"I challenge anybody to watch us play and try to decide what we're going to do the next game," Hobson said. "We're half wild. I don't think we know where we're going half the time, but we go there fast and sometimes it works out."

Anisha Buchanan scored 14 points and Ashley Deans added 13 points both players came off the bench to lead King College (21-12). The five Tornado starters combined to score 11 points as their program made its first national-tournament appearance since 1993.

Hobson wasn't completely satisfied with Hastings' performance. The Broncos started slowly and finished with 18 turnovers.

"All in all, that's what first games are for you're going to be a little shaky," Hobson said. "That's why you want a high seed, so maybe you can be a little shaky and still win because if you're playing a real, real good team, you might not get out of the first round.

"Everybody goes through it. We haven't played for 12 days and we've been sitting down here for two days. It's not conducive to playing well, so a lot of times you're not going to play well and you just have to try to find a way to win and survive."

Up next for Hastings is a second-round game with Benedictine (29-5). The Broncos won an earlier meeting between the two teams 77-70 back on Dec. 14 in the Midland Lutheran Tournament at Fremont.

Hobson said he expects Benedictine to provide a major challenge especially since the Broncos aren't expected to have Ducey back at full speed. The 6-foot sophomore center, who averaged 18 points per game this season, just had her cast removed Tuesday.

"You take your leading scorer and rebounder out of the lineup and then try to play a team that was just rocking us we were down 14 in the first half," Hobson said. "It will be a struggle."
