ARCADIA The Arcadia United Methodist Church has just completed sponsorship of its fourth mission trip in the last 15 months.
The most recent trip was to Greensburg, Kan., the week of Feb. 24 to help in rebuilding efforts.
On May 4, 2007, more than 950 homes were destroyed in a tornado in Greensburg. More than 100 additional homes had to be torn down. The business district was completely destroyed. Many rural home and building sites were destroyed as well.
Fourteen volunteers from Arcadia, Comstock, Broken Bow, Mason City, Sumner, Ord, Cambridge and Kearney spent the week working on four different homes in and around Greensburg. Most of the work consisted of construction tasks, such as framing, drywall, painting and floor installation.
The group was housed in the Haviland United Methodist Church, 10 miles east of Greensburg. It took its own cooks and showered in the locker rooms at Haviland High School.
The Arcadia United Methodist Church has taken three charter busloads of volunteers to Louisiana to aid in the rebuilding effort following Hurricane Katrina, working in the communities of Slidell, New Orleans and Dulac. Another charter bus, with 40 youths and 14 adults, will leave for Gulf Port, Miss., on June 21 to help in rebuilding in that community.
