Moonshell announces 2008 arts awards recipients

The Moonshell Arts and Humanities Council awards banquet will be on April 5 at Riverside Golf Club.

The evening will include a reception at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30. Tickets for the dinner cost $30 apiece. To purchase tickets, call Tricia Beem at the Grand Island/Hall County Convention and Visitors Bureau at 382-4400 or call 382-7962.

The 2008 award recipients are:

Patron of the Arts Award (Individual) Donna Moyer, Wood River.

Patron of the Arts Award (Organization) Grand Island/Hall County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Event or Performance Award Piccadilly Players, "Smoke on the Mountain."

Literary Award Grand Island Independent's book, "A Commemoration of the Sesquicentennial of Hall County, Nebraska."

Larry Maupin Award Jesse LaBrie, Grand Island Senior High Island Chamber Singers, Madrigal and Voices of the Island.

Outstanding Visual Artist or Performance Award Ken Bassett, Prairie Winds Art Center.

Arts and Humanities Project Award Stuhr Museum for its weeklong Sesquicentennial Celebration.

Junior Outstanding Artist Award Ben Robbins, Grand Island Senior High.

Junior Event or Performance Award Cheryl Lauer Schuett, Grand Island public schools' Fifth-grade Honor Choir.

Moonshell Hall of Fame Award Grand Island Concert Association Diamond Jubilee Year.

The seventh annual banquet will feature Robert Hanna, a graduate of Grand Island Senior High who is an award-winning architect and artist. Hanna also teaches drawing and watercolor around the Midwest. His presentation is titled "Through the Eyes of an Artist."

Hanna spent his childhood in Grand Island and studied architecture at the University of Nebraska, receiving a bachelor of architecture degree in 1963. He maintained a private architectural practice in Lincoln from 1968 to 2004.

Hanna has been presented the Nebraska Honor Award and the States Regional Honor Award for design excellence in architecture as well as the highest honor that the American Institute of Architects of Nebraska can bestow, the Harry F. Cunningham Gold Medal for Architectural Excellence.
