The Nebraska Legislature's effort to reduce weeds and increase water flow in Nebraska rivers will be detailed Tuesday to the Hall County board.
Hall County Weed Department Director Rob Schultz will give an update of his department's activities, including work being done as part of LB701.
Under that legislation, the state allocated $2 million over two years to be used to control weeds along Nebraska rivers that are fully appropriated or overappropriated, Schultz said.
The Platte River is overappropriated, so work will be done there, he said.
The LB701 work will begin in Dawson County and work its way east, although work in Hall County will be limited, Schultz said.
Schultz is applying for other grant funds to assist with the reduction of phragmites in the Platte River. Phragmites is highly aggressive and is not scoured away by high water and ice, he said.
Schultz hopes to work on reducing the amount of phragmites in the Platte River between Interstate 80 and Highway 34.
