The Second Street widening project was off to a slow start on Monday as rain and near-freezing temperatures settled into the area.
"Shoot!" said Project Manager Scott Griepenstroh of the Nebraska Department of Roads.
He had hoped to get the $4.5 million, nearly yearlong project under way on Monday by rerouting traffic to begin removing pavement from Second Street.
"We haven't shifted traffic that's westbound onto Third. We won't start that until tomorrow (Tuesday)," Griepenstroh said.
He worried that all the different turning patterns of traffic in the construction area where signs were recently put up made for a bad combination with Monday's freezing rain and icy spots.
Instead, Griepenstroh expected to begin rerouting westbound Second Street traffic on Tuesday morning. The westbound traffic will go to Third Street from Clark to Grant, which have already been marked for the rerouting.
Eastbound Second Street traffic will remain on the south lanes of Second Street on Tuesday as northbound lanes are restriped. Once the striping is complete, the eastbound traffic will be switched over to a single lane on the northern lanes of Second Street.
Griepenstroh said stop signs are already in place on Third Street where detour traffic will be entering.
Construction work is expected to continue on the project through November.
A fifth lane a common turning lane is being added to Second Street along with improved drainage to prevent water damage to the roadway.
