Opposes fluoride in our public water system
Here we go again with putting fluoride in the water system. We voted on this issue years ago and the people of Grand Island said no. Now Senator Joel Johnson is sponsoring a bill making it mandatory that fluoride be added to all public water systems throughout Nebraska. What has changed? Nothing. It is still not 100 percent proven that it helps reduce cavities. Of course the government studies say that it helps reduce cavities, but who can always believe what the government has to say?
It's like the studies they do on taking certain vitamins. One day they say its great to mega doses of this vitamin and your body will only absorb what it needs, and then a year later they come out and say, oh, no, taking too much of this causes these problems. Who can you believe anymore?
There is a massive amount of information about this issue on the Internet and it deals with the pros and cons of fluoridation. And if you look around a little you will see there is a lot of opinions posted by medical professionals. You be the judge.
For me, I am opposed to putting this chemical in our water supply. I feel that it is not worth taking a gamble with our children and grandchildren.

Tim Victor would be good for NW
I applaud Tim Victor in his announcement of running for the Northwest High School Board of Education. I've known Tim for many years in both the business sector and personally. His ability to look at issues objectively and his sense of being "straight-forward" and honest in dealing with people will be a tremendous enhancement to the present board. Perhaps, with Tim's announcement, others will recognize the need for change.

Ron Mills sizzled in Sunday gig
Sunday was a magic day to any big band musician from this area that heard the famed Glenn Miller Orchestra. From the tight discipline and unbelievable dynamics of the sax section to the overall musicianship of the band, it was a day to remember.
As a brother to the piano player, Ron Mills, I cannot express in words how proud of him I was Sunday. He was featured many times and to have one of his original arrangements performed with a band of that status is beyond description. From the hundreds of gigs we played together over the years, I can almost tell what he is going to play for his next idea, and they are all neat. Someday, Ron, I promise, we will be together on this Band. I just can't tell you how proud we all were of your excellence, man. You cooked like a true jazz cat should. Grand Island will never forget this day.
Thank you, Grand Island Concert Association!

NW flood project long overdue
I feel compelled to write about Milt Moravek's comments in today's paper that the May 2005 flood was not much of a flood in the north part of town. He apparently didn't see the flooding there, or read the paper about the sandbagging or cutting North Road, etc. Our rain gauge showed more than 7 inches of rain, and the Moores Creek drainage behind our house ran higher than I'd ever seen it in 27 years living here. There was considerable flooding in our neighborhood, and north of Highway 2, and along Airport Road.
It brings me to something that has bothered me ever since that day why there wasn't better warning for the northern part of town. Yes, there was a flood warning issued for the entire area, so we were on watch. But someone should have been monitoring the flood crest on the Silver Creek and issued a specific warning that it would crest in the northwest part of Grand Island that evening. Maybe people could have started sandbagging earlier, rather than as the water rose.
I always figured officials were too busy patting themselves on the back for the Wood River project to watch any other streams in the area.
Don't get me wrong, I am very glad the Wood River project was so successful. But the southern part of town isn't the only place that matters. I'm looking forward to the northwest flood control project in the future. Thank you.
